It's going to be no different than the last couple seasons. Everyone will debut their new chassis and one, maybe two teams will have revelation moments of genius with a clever f-duct or double diffuser-like devices which other teams will eventually copy. Rinse and repeat.

As for drivers making up ground, I believe the larger teams with wind tunnel testing can hash out a majority of their issues, but the smaller virtual fluid dynamic teams are going to have a rough time making up ground. Most of the teams know exactly what issues they need to fix by now and the really fast teams need to figure out how to remain fast this season and next season (I feel for them!). It's simple and there is no need to overthink things. I believe this is why most teams are ok with the lack of pre-season testing. Of course all of this is moot if the tires throw everyone for a loop which I kind of doubt.

This entire season has been nothing more than a testing season for everyone who has not been a consistent podium finisher. The fight at the top is rough at the moment and I guarantee they are using a large amount of their resources to win this year's championship and have not devoted nearly as much time to next season as most of the other teams already have. There may very well be a game-changing difference next year if someone is clever......

My question is if the teams have decided that putting on a good show is more important than winning.

With the 107% rule next year, they had better or there will be no show.

The 107 rule will effect the newbies more than any one else (correct me if I'm wrong here) how will that effect the show?

I guess I was referring to 'the show' in a different manner than you were. With the 107 rule, the newbies who haven't upped their speed ante will not be a part of the show.

So that's the silver lining what about the rest? ;)
It seems that the teams are voting against their own competitive interests here.

    :)

I haven't "studied" the data, but a quick look-see at lap times suggests that, had the 107% rule been in place, they'd all have actually been inside it [OK, there's a few "no times", but outside that, I think they'd have been in every race.]

They're really not *that* far off - OK, HRT seems to be a shambles, but again, at least they're there.....

Indeed. I understand they don't want a return to dedicated test teams, but surely more off season testing should be allowed? Where's the pressure coming from? [The pygmy?] And still no suggestion for "Monday tests".... :-(

    Cheers,
    Ian

So they moan that their drivers are moaning about testing rule and then they say, we'll carry it on anyway.

What testing rules have been changed this off season because of the Pirelli's? I thought I heard Varsha say something like right after the season, the teams would be hard at work testing the new tires. Varsha could be wrong(wouldn't be his first time).

Well, they said that after the final race of the season, the teams will be testing the new Pirellis at Abu Dhabi. I'm not sure how much mileage they will get...or how many days testing will be...

According to Speedweek (who cites Whitmarsh) there will be one additional testing session just before the first GP:

Other than that testing restrictions remain the same (no mention of the Pirelli test, which is neither here nor there).

That's so dumb. They are changing arguably one of the most important factors in F1, and one extra test? I know the teams just voted down the inseason testing, but after the last race, let them do what they want.

Doesn't make sense as to why teams agree to stuff they do.

Would be fabulous too see them running the Pirelli's right after Abu Dhabi. We could see objectively what a back-to-back comparison of the two tires speed-wise might be. That is if they show the times.
