How many hours would it take to work on the motor during an engine out service? Considering a situation where there aren't any extras needed, just doing the service itself.

So not replacing the headers, not cleaning the engine bay, not repainting valve covers, none of the extras.

How many hours would it take to service the engine itself after purchasing a kit from Ricambi, not including the hours to take out the motor, or put it back in place. Just the hours on the motor itself.

    BTW the car is a 1997 355

I could be wrong, but I would imagine removing the motor would be somewhere between 7-10 hours alone?

The reason I ask is because I am contemplating removing the motor, then possibly having a shop install the parts. It seems pretty straight forward to me, however, after reading through the threads, there seems to be talk about "tricks" that someone working on these motors should know. But the threads do not go into what these "tricks" are.

I am just toying with that idea for now, there is a shop that is willing to work on the motor itself.

+1, and fraught with many pitfalls. Particulary warranty issues if there are problems later. Is it the fault of the service or the reinstallation of the engine/transaxle? One could go round and round trying to figure out that one.

I really can't imagine many reputable service facilities that would go along this arrangement.

I'm all for saving as much money as possible, but I think this is not the place to scrimp.

When we Stooges do this we allow for 2-3 days but then we kind of goof around alot. Someone has to keep ernie and fbb from wrestling around and then each guy gets to voice his opinion before we do anything then we argue about who's ideas are better (ernie and fbb mostly then we have to pull them off each other when it gets too heated). Of course, there's the constant verbal abuse and tomfoolery, so 2-3 days is about it. :)

To be honest, I very much enjoy working on cars, always have and always will. This isn't even about trying to save money, I really want to do this work myself. I am just somewhat skeptical, because of what I mentioned earlier, I do not know what the "tricks" with this motor are. If you take the F-badge off, at the end of the day it is an engine. It is not kryptonite that should be avoided at all costs.

I do not doubt that I can do the actual work on the motor, after all there are some great in depth threads on this site. I have all the parts sitting in a box here, I'm just considering my options by getting info that I have not already come across yet.

I havnt removed the engine om my 355 F1 yet but will do this winter. Got a deal with my local Ferrari workshop and they will do the belt change and cam timing etc. I will do all the other things like painting covers, changing rubber tubings and broken electrical connectors etc. Removing the engine with a good scissor lift is pretty straight forward. On the 348 it took an experienced friend about 4 hours. But I am going to take it slow and make sure I dont mess anything up. About doing the cambelt too, I want some one with experience to look at the engine and parts and tell me if anything else needs to be changed.

It is going to be an interesting winter :)
