    I bought a 2001 360 Spider late last year with 7000 miles on it. The PPI indicated the clutch was at 50%. Here it is just 2500 miles later and it is throwing me into Neutral and it keeps getting worse. It jumps into neutral between 1st an 2nd when I go to shift. I took out the Angolar Speed sensors and they were black with clutch material. I cleaned them and put them back in and now the clutch is working fine. I know how to drive and take care of a clutch to extend it's life but it depresses me to think the clutch is shot and needs to be replaced at 8500 miles. Do you guys think it was just the sensors and my problem wont return, or is it something else? I searched the entire F-Chat site and there was no info on the Angolar Speed Sensors? My mechanic Dave Prall is MIA to answer questions like this.

    I forgot to mention it is an F1. Still working fine 50 miles later. Does anyone know what an Angolar Speed sensor does? Does anyone have a list of the 10 things that can cause an F1 to jump into neutral?

    This is indeed interesting. I tell everyone that my car is jumping into neutral, a very common problem before a $5000.00 fix and not much of a response at all. I explain how I took the sensors out and cleaned them and saved $5000.00 and still no response. It makes me wonder how many people in history paid $5000.00 to replace a clutch that did not need replacing and it further makes me wonder why there is no F-Chat documentation on the Angolar Speed sensors?

    You make a good point about the strange lack of response to what is obvious a really interesting piece of information, and why it has not previously been discussed here, with a resulting document becoming a 'sticky'.

    The F1 clutch issue is alway's a hot potato.

    Can you please elaborate on these sensors, and where you access them.

    My take on it is that most are more interested in talking about there hi dollar mods than really learning what makes them work or break. I myself have a wiring problem I'm trying to work thru.

    I think that usually the clutch wears out before the sensor gets dirty, ergo the lack of experience from others on this issue ;-)

    I've been through a couple of clutches on my 360 ... at no time did either of the two shops mention anything about replacing the angular sensors. I'll have to sort through my old service records to see if they were among the items replaced.

    The sensors rarely fail or require replacement. But, cleaning them up is generally included as part of any clutch replacement service.

    There are actually (2) sensors (items 28 & 40 on the parts diagram) that monitor the info (relative angular velocities) used by the F1 system. This is the schematic for an '01 US-spec 360 Spider w/ F1 trans (Ray's car) --- other model years / specs may differ......

    Sensor #28 can be accessed from above in the engine bay. Same for sensor #40, but you have to remove the air cleaner / air intake assembly. Both are located on the driver's side of the bell housing & transaxle assemblies.

    Thx guys... already changed my clutch but long time ago (25,000 miles ago)... so next time i will try the cleaning first... hopefully not too soon :)

    True but I think that way is too much work.
    Just take the left wheel out, take the gravel guard and the cover out and you will get a great accses to the left transmission side.
    IMO

    I did, but I really need a schematic so I can follow the wires around to where they start and end in the looms to locate the grounding problem.

    Gents -

    does anyone have any idea exactly what this angolar sensor does?

    My clutch has been acting funny of late on my 6-speed and i was about to throw money at it and replace everything but i wonder if i should attempt to have a go at this sensor first before doing the whole shebang.

    I've got 38k on the odo now and counting.
