If it weren't for the Porsche 918, this would be a big surprise.

It's amazing how close the two companies track each other on supercar development (e.g., F40 twin turbo/959 twin turbo and CGT/Enzo body and suspension).

But that's no surprise considering their common market, common government regulations, relatively close proximity, current global technology, and likely some third-party technology they can both use.

I don't think you'll ever see a supercar designed from scratch (i.e., not use some exisiting technology or components). It would cost too much.

Now it may bve a few years before we see this car!

Hard to say, but judging form the response of the Porsche hybrid supercar, it wouldnt surprise me that ferrari is considering it too.

Having said that, the Italian gov isnt where Luca is heading. Rumours are picking up fast that he will make a big bid for control of F1, circumventing the control of FOM and FIA. I for one would LOVE to see that.

I think the fact that this would make it race legal at Le Mans may have something to do with it.

EXP1 the class we're running P 4/5 Competizione in at the 24 Hours of Nurburging encourages hybrids like the 918. We're thinking of using an electric/Kers unit possibly at
Le Mans in 2012 in a Evo version of P 4/5 C. (Thinking of not yet committed to)

For a street car? Don't you think they're more worried about their ability to continue making high-performance street cars?

Adding KERS to there cars will allow them to get around some emissions laws. This could be what will allow Ferrari to continue to build normally aspirated large capacity engines.

Ferrari also love to show to be filtering down technology from F1 to there road cars, and with KERS making a come back in 2011, its another link F1 to Road Car link..

I think they should be worried about the ability to create high performance street cars, the only reason we are able to question this is because enzo HAD to build street cars to help fund his passion of racing, and development.

I think some of the best examples made by Ferrari are when they have developed something new for the race track and re made it in a user friendly version for the road, Eg the modern car of the enzo with the introduction of advances in electronics, ( I know the gearbox was used in the 575 but like everything else with Ferrari they always put a new product out on trial before being used to it's full potential in a new model, to help sell more units). No disputing the enzo is a great car.

And I think the times when they don't seem to hit the mark is when they produce a product just to replace an aging model.
And for that reason I welcome the hybrid technology ( I just hope they never have to lose the music made from the exhausts )

This June at the Ring MB will be there with a GT3 version of their new Gull Wing. Porsche will be there with a GT3/Hybrid version of their Street car and also possibly with a 918. Audi will be there with a GT3 version of their R8. Lexus with an LFA. Aston, etc. etc. etc.
We will be there with P 4/5 C but Ferrari won't have any official presence.

At Le Mans in 2012 McLaren will be there. The 458 GT2 will race against it but when the new Enzo comes out IMO the only way it will be competitive will be as a hybrid. I don't think they want to let the 918 Porsche and the McLaren have Le Mans to themselves.

On the street the only way they'll meet emissions in the coming years will be with turbo's.
Hybrids will give them greater fuel efficiency and "Push to Pass". If they use a modified 4 wheel system it will also really help pull their cars out of the turns. The Porsche GT3 RS Hybrid is a serious bit of kit especially as it pulls out of the turns. This is how I see it and I do think that Ferrari wants to return to Le Mans with a car that could win. There will be Great pressure on organisers to make hybrid cars VERY competitive and once again this technology will flow from the Race Track to the street. I also think that F1 will feel great pressure to go hybrid and this will increase the flow to street cars of hybrid technology.

None yet nor will the Entry level one be but the next McLaren supercar may and all F1 race cars will. Porsche's super 918, emissions, the Greens and race regulators will pull both McLaren and Ferrari in this direction.

It makes KERS in F1 relevant to the road car industry. I can't say I'm opposed to that

It's an unfortunate trend (as far as my current thinking goes). With the confirmation of the 918 Spyder there's no doubt this will definitely be part of the Enzo replacement. Good or bad? Not enough information to make an informed decision yet. Doesn't really sound appealing as an integral part of Porsche or Ferrari's next supercar but we may be pleasantly surprised by the end result.

It worked so well in F1 that it surely deserves a place in the finest sports car in the world?

As the voice of dissention; I'll say it.

Cars have become so uninspired I couldn't care less. Performance is not the "end all." A car MUST stir the sole. Almost NONE do today. Certainly NOTHING in the Scuderia does, IMO. Lambo and Mauser too. I think they are all pretty much dead fish.

It is sad. I think the supercar makers should just say "F-It," and build R E A L CARS or just quit.

I am so glad I say the "Hey Days" of the automobile (50s-80s).

May I die before I see its complete demise.

    Won't happen.
    1) Buying F1 (that's what you're suggesting?) won't go for less than €5 billion
    2) It'll be 5 billion quickly pissed away since NO ONE will watch anymore because it WILL become a Ferrari playground. I'll guarantee you that ALL decisions made will be in favour of Ferrari

Bernie won't sell up until he dies anyways.

You forget that we haven't seen the last of KERS and it will be back in the 2011 season and on.

Ferrari has prototyped it into a 599GTB show car, I have no idea if it is a 'runner"....

I'm only concerned that the unit will be too heavy. If it weighs less than 50KG's then it's ok I suppose...

The F1 unit weighed in at 35KG.

Hopefully, the driving experience of this new generation of supercars will live up to their other objectives.

The Tesla, one of the first all electric sports cars, goes pretty fast in a straight line but fares poorly on a track.

They already have. The Porsche GT3 RS Hybrid led the 24 Hours of Nurburgring until a conventional non hybrid part broke. It was much faster than the F430 GT2.
