Gents: I am in the process of purchasing a 1997 355. I am doing all the appropriate dd. I am being told that it may not be possible to access previous maintenance records for the vehicle despite the fact that the vehicle was serviced at a legitimate Ferrari dealership? It would seem to me that all maintenance would be recorded by the VIN so that any Ferrari dealership could access that information through the Ferrari data base.

So, am I being sold "snake oil" or is there some truth to these statements. In other words, there is privacy issues?

AFAIK, the service info can be provided by the delearship for yes it is kept on file. They might ask for a release from the seller ino rder to provide it to a prospective buyer. Done it myself.

99% of all auto dealers iI know work like this.......

The only dealership that can access the service history, is the one that wrote the work orders, and did the job. Their computers are internal systems and proprietary. One F-dealer cannot access another F-dealers system, because they are not interconnected, and FWIW they may not even be using the same software to begin with. One dealer may use Reynolds and Reynolds and another may use ADP or a windows based system, etc.

Any F-dealer can access the warranty history online however, as that is held on the manufacturer's servers, not each individual dealers in house IT hardware.

What information you receive is totally dependent upon your attitude in requesting same, the prevailing privacy laws, current vendor or past owners, dealer employees, et al.
