The other day I was fed up with my computer and decided to wipe it clean and reinstall windows. I backed up all sorts of files, wrote down several dozen passwords, but did not bother to write down my MS Office activation/product key because I "knew" I had it written down where I physically keep all of my disks and manuals.

Well, as luck would have it, I forgot that with this computer I had bought a product key but only wrote it down once God knows where. And the email account I registered for it is long gone. Genius :) I know...

Am I totally screwed here or is there a way to avoid repurchasing a license that I've already purchased once?

So annoyed with myself! It's like packing for a trip and arriving at your destination only to realize you left something important behind. Doh!

If you can find the CD it generally in the jewel case. Otherwise you're screwed. If you have child in college though you can get ultimate office for $60

No CD as it was a direct download online :(
Yes, 2007. But hey, maybe I should just bite the bullet and get 2010...

    Use OpenOffice? It's free.

Or, since you have already paid for it once, just find a free torrent somewhere online and download it. Read the comments to make sure you are getting a good copy without a virus.

They would of sent the key to you via email. You don't have a copy of that?

You can view your backup emails by installing the trail version of outlook then importing the pst's.

That's one of the first things I thought of, however the email address was an account that is long gone. I have backed up data for several years of all email addresses but somehow this slipped through the cracks!

Just been through the same thing, after many heated conversations with the "support" people at Dell, I finally got them to send me a new copy...I don't reccomend my methods as it was brutal and stressful on me...finally went through kind of a back door at Dell and had the CDs in a couple of days...In short, I was the squeaky wheel that got the grease...to some very large exponent....

I went through the same thing and IIRC I went back through the MS website and was able to find the registry key. If you know where you bought it check that out.

How do you find a registry key on a drive that's been wiped?

You are screwed. Without an e-mail address, there's no way for MS to send you another key.

Beyond that, O7 sucks. O2010 sucks less, and it's cheap. Get on the horn with MS and ask them which versions allow you to install O2010 on a desktop and a mobile device. I've got O2010 Pro and the EULA said I could put it on my desktop and my laptop. I had to call in the auth on the laptop, but that only took 6 minutes and I was good to go. You may be able to grab the full deal for far less than retail, if you are moderately clever.

And don't do the Technet thing and pass out all those "free" serials to your buddies. You DO NOT WANT TO BE skull****ed by Steve Ballmer. <-they actually do this. Don't do it if you run a business.

And people wonder why they're affectionately known as the Evil Empire!

I dunno how "advanced" an M$ user you are, but I'd strongly suggest giving Open Office a go - It supports *all* formats (including doc and docx) and, as I've said before, is probably more "Microsoft compatible" than Microsoft itself right now......

Best of all, it's free - If you don't like it, nothing lost. For sure, it successfully handles the vast majority of M$ formatted stuff you're ever going to see - It will also save in those formats and no one will know the difference.

Like all of these "all in one" suites (WP, SS, Presentations, drawing, email, blah, blah) it does have a little learning curve, but if you're familiar with Office you'll pick it up real quick.

Give it a go, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.

    Cheers,
    Ian

I agree with the advice to use openoffice. However, if you must use Office, there are two ways to get the key. The first is click "register by phone". It will generate a code and direct you to call an automated attendant at an 800 number. It's a PIA, but works assuming you have a legit copy. ;) The second is to PM this nice guy named powerpig who hangs out here and ask for a code and he will probably PM you a legal code. Either way, you should come out OK.

Have you tried calling MS? It's a long shot, but when they couldn't track down my key through the order system, they just gave me a new one.

I didn't find it on my computer, I went back through MS where I bought it. If you downloaded it they should have a record of the sale with the registry key.

Since you don't have the same email address it may take more work but they should be able to figure it out for you.

I have office on my laptop, and am about to buy a new one, can I use the office I have on the new laptop, or do I have to buy another?

Most likely, another. Some versions of Home and Student have multiple licenses. I would try loading it with the key you have on the new one. Worst they can say is no.

I'm out of date with their licensing, but thought as long as you used the same email address & keycode you could install onto as many platforms as you want? [In theory, I guess you're supposed to "destroy" the old install, but they don't check, do they?]

    [Apologies for the hijack!]

    Cheers,
    Ian
