I know a few brave souls out there have payed for their tickets in pennies. My question is do they (city, towing company etc) have to accept the payment as it is legal US tender? Yes it may as well be the definition of immaturity but the story value alone will be worth it.
    The fine is $135.

    It may not fly.

I've heard some places have a policy against accepting large amounts of change in payment of fines.

If you make a scene about it you could end up in contempt of court.

At the very least you'll be there a long time while it's counted and verified. Don't expect the bureaucrats to be very cooperative.

Call the city and ask what forms of payment are accepted.

They should accept it, but sometimes they won't. It's a pain for them to count it out, they would have to take your word for it that it is the exact payment. I'm pretty sure if it is rolled, they would take it, but that kind of beats the fun out of it.

Here is an OfficeMax commercial that is hilarious: WARNING USED CAR DEALER ALERT :D

I actually did this to a bank that repoed my car due to their own mistake.

Longer version of the story. I paid off the car many months prior to this. Somehow there was a balance of $12 something left over. most likely from the lady not calculating the interest right or some stupid fee. Few months go by and I hadn't received the title yet and called in to the bank. I specifically asked if the payoff was correct and was told it was and that they would look into why the title wasn't released. I had stopped receiving statements as well (it was the only account I had with that bank). Another few weeks goes by and still nothing.

One day I wake up to some guy knocking on my door, I answer and see my car on a flatbed. The guy was asking for the keys. Anyhow, he turned out to be a decent guy. I showed him the canceled check showing the payoff of the car and he started making calls to get to the bottom of it. Finally ends up speaking to the bank manager who states I still owe them 12 dollars.

The whole time I was pretty civil, advised him that I had called in to verify etc. I even go so far as to tell him to authorize releasing my car and I'll bring the $12 bucks to him. For whatever reason this idiot decided not to go that route and insisted on having the car being taken. At this point I start getting frustrated with him, I particularly blew my lid when he attempted to cup his hand over the phone while speaking to someone with him and said something to the effect of ''geez, I hope this guy doesn't figure out we screwed this up''. Thats about when I blew my lid. He actually hung up the phone when he got back on and I told him I could hear him talking.

Needless to say he refused to answer from that point on, finally having his assistant call me and tell me that they were still taking the car, but if I came and paid the 12 dollars they would have it re-delivered to my house.

So I immediately decided to go get a bag of pennies. Then demanded to see the guy in person when I got to the bank. He actually refused to come out of his office and kept sending people out front to deal with me. Anyhow, they got frustrated as well and one of them actually said ''sir, this is really immature, you don't have any cash?''. To which I responded by opening my wallet, counting through a bunch of 20's and going ''nope, I just have 20's and I need those for later''.

Joke ended up being on me, they had one of those coin counter things in the back, and to top it off the coward manager would not pay to have my car delivered back to my house and I had to go get it myself. Nice thing was the tow guy was on my side the whole time, let me keep the keys and parked it out front so I could grab it.

Excellent idea. If they question it, just tell them, due to the economy, you are broke and went into you childhood piggy bank to pay for this. Then say, Sorry! I hope it wasn't a ferrari you got the ticket in.

Pay it in nickels. If I remember my accounting classes correctly, there is actually a law that says you only HAVE to accept pennies if the amount is $5.00 or less.

    No such law on nickels.

In pennys, that would be 13,500 coins at about 92.6 pounds. Not sure I'd want to deal with that mess of coins.

In nickels, it would be 2,700 coins and about 26.8 pounds! Hmmm...much more doable and still gets the point across.

Bummer you will have to tell them that you had to give up your "Nickel Collection" for this...

I believe many places that get stuck just use scales to weigh the coins. They know how much a dollars worth of pennies or nickels weigh weigh and just do the math from there. I think that was due to them feeling sorry for the clerks stuck with counting the coins who had nothing to do with issuing the fine.

Since you're user name includes "ATL" I'm assuming you live in Georgia. I know for a fact the DMV nor traffic court accept any cash payments any more, DMV never accepted coins. I had a friend in college who owed $10 for his license renewal....had $9 in cash and 4 quarters and they wouldn't accept it. After putting up a big stink, he got kicked out and got harassed by a police officer in the parking lot.

    Oh yea we did!

Back in about 1996, we got the shout out on the radio that some moron was paying his fine in pennies. So a few of us with nothing better to do than eat Krispy Kream went down there. Sure enough, he was.

Here is the rub; if it is not easy to verify, a receiver CAN force you to show you are giving them the proper amount of cash. That is (was?) the law in 1996 in GA and even in Cobb County. So, dumb ass was sitting there counting them out in front of the clerk and he had quite a following. (Most of whom wanted to kick his ass for taking up an entire lane at the Fulton County Court House.)

I did not stay as I had donuts to eat, but i heard after an hour or so, he collected his coins, wrote them a check, and left. Remember, even at one a second you will be there all day for a $100 fine.

That'd only work if they knew the dates of the pennies. Most pre-1982 pennies (full copper) weigh 3.11 grams/penny (145 to the pound), but post '82 (zinc core) only weigh 2.5 grams each (181 to the pound).

About 30 years ago, when I was around 12, I did something like this. My brothers and I were what is known as "latch key kids" - both my parents worked, so we were home alone every day after school. You can imagine the sorts of trouble we got into. I digress - one day, we were really hungry and we knew of a pizza place that delivered - Mama G's. We called and the dialogue went something like this:

My brother: "Hi, do you deliver to Howell?" (Howell was the town we lived in).

    Mama G's: "Yes"

My brother: "Ok - one large pie please"

I remember this like yesterday - the pie cost 4 bucks. We were punk kids, and we didn't have ANY money, so we raided a piggy bank I had and scrounged up 400 pennies, which we put in a plastic baggie. You can imagine the look on the delivery guy's face - he was like "WTF???"...priceless. We didn't even TIP the guy - what the heck did we know??? So we enjoyed the pie, thinking to ourselves we have a real good racket here. Mom and Dad wouldn't know squat and we'd eat like kings. The very next day, we called Mama G's for a large pie...it went down like this:

My brother: "Hi, do you deliver to Howell?" (Howell was the town we lived in).

    Mama G's: "NO!"...click...they hung up

    :)
