Are the F40 and 288 GTO engines descended from the the 308 engine ? Although there are significant differences in the fuel delivery systems, and small differences in displacement, they certainly look similar,

If so, then the 288 and F40 engines would be "Dino" engines, no ?

They are very similar to the QV engines. As to what components are shared, I am not sure. I do know that the F40 head gaskets are unique in some way, but I am not sure which way. Hoping someone can chime in as I have also wondered this.

turbo cars have different head gaskets because of the heat and pressure from the turbo.

Can later V-8's (QV, F40, etc) fuel injection be fitted to carb 308 block?

No idea, but why would you want to do that?

Physically changing out and getting rid of carbs in favor of Fi would be sacralige and cause instant revocation of your "Man Card."

Basic architecture goes all the way to a 360 I think . I'm no expert but from Keith Bluemel book the 288 motor F114B has an 80mm bore and a 71mm stroke ( stroke is the same as a 308 ) Bore was reduced by 1mm for the turbo racing function I think .
Are the QV , 328 and 348 heads not the same castings and you can assume they were used on the 288 and F40 ????
The Lancia LC2 Le Man cars also used this motor or a motor based on these castings/ bore centers .
    The F40 F120A has a 81,9mm bore and a 69,5mm stroke
The 328 has a 2mm increase in both bore and stroke from the 308 motors , 83mm bore and 73mm stroke .
    The 348 F119D motor goes up 2mm again 85mm bore and a 75mm stroke
From memory the 355 is the same bore but a 77mm stroke and the 5 valve head .
The 360 is also an 85mm bore just an 89mm stroke .
I think Ferrari decided 85mm was as big a bore as they could go with this bore spacing ?? Although I think Nick Forzas 3,5L 308 uses an 89mm bore ?
I can tell you that a 360 crank drops straight into a 308 block . This was how Carobu was building their 3,5L motors although now they seem to have moved to a custom crank .
I'd love to know why ??

I knew Ferrari thought it was prudent to make a different type of head gasket for the 288 and F40, but I never knew why as there are several turbo and supercharged 308s/328s running stock head gaskets which stand up to the pressure just fine.

And no, the later QV heads cannot be fitted to the carb blocks. Why on earth do such a thing anyway !

And Dave, your post just added about 4000 more questions lol. Very curious as I haven't the answer to any of those interesting inquiries of yours!

So, do you think the engines are more alike or more different from each other?

    Which two are the closest?
