    Correct.
Its not so easy to step back in and resume winning.
Ask that Michael guy. He knows ;)

STR has one win as a manufacture, just like Porsche. As an engine supplier, Ford/Cosworth and Honda are two other suppliers that comes immediately to mind to compare against Porsche's success in F1.

    Porsche dominated F1 ? Seriously ?!

Porsche did well, but not spectacularly well, in F2. They got waxed in their last year, '62.

No reason why ...other than a design which was simply not fast enough.

Gurney won one F1 race in it, and if he couldn't make it a regular winner, no one was going to. When the Lotus 25 came along, Pursche saw the writing on the wall- their flat eight was going to be difficult to design into a monocoque- and indeed, Porsche didn't build a monosoque until the 956...in 1983!

The 924 and 944 are different in many respects but are of the same origin, the engine being one of the biggest differences of course. Still it's a long time past.

Exactly, Porsche participated in F1 but were no where close to dominating F1.

Their engines were dominating in the eighties. I took the comment in that sense.

Just as Merc or BMW engines were forces to be reckoned with. But as soon as they tried to build the whole car, they became the joke of pitlane. Porsche will see the same thing happening if they try.

Was BMW the joke of the pitlane? I thought of BMW as being the best of the 2nd tier in 2008.

I see Audi at Formula 1 to compete against Mercedes (and now MB's own team is a mid-pack runner, beating them is possible in a short time).

Then Porsche fills the empty space left at Le Mans (and now that they sell diesels too, current regulations are not a big problem).

AUDI will get its ass kicked in F1. If Ross Brawn is struggling with Mercedes money along with 20+ years of experience, where the fook do you think AUDI will wind up with NO experience and a ton of money?

F1 simply is not a viable place to strut one's racing stuff. You could tell me that Force India is doing ok, but if your team isn't being bankrolled by 1.5 billion people making 4 cents an hour then I'm going to tell you to get lost. That's the reality of Force India. Paid for by lots and lots of bricklayer money and nothing to show for it. Reach for the stars, LOL.

The cost to show up and have a chance at winning is in the multiples of billions. If you don't have that, then **** off.

Red Bull managed to get to the top. They needed three or four years and lots of money (plus the pile of money that Ford had already spent with Stewart and Jaguar), but they did it. And you can bet that the VAG group has veeery deep pockets.

Question is: in this troubled times, is it all worth it? I really doubt it, but I´m sure that if someone can waste money in Formula 1 these days is Volkswagen.

Nothing can guarantee success. Nor money, luck or Adrian Newey.

But I prefer to take a gamble having almost unlimited funds than without them.

    I agree

My guess is IF it happens it would be a 'Porsche/Audi powered by VW' or some naming combination thereof.

No, it was technically a TAG motor. M.Ojeh has a LOT of money.

From what I have read is was actually a Tag-Porsche engine. Regardless, with the experience that VW-Audi-Porsche has with turbo engines, they will have a head start in the upcoming F1 turbo-4 era...

Tag signed the checks. Porsche designed, built and serviced the engines. You decide where the credit belongs.
Hint: I know how to sign checks but don't even change my own oil.

As engine manufactures, they can be part of the winning package but IMO, they can never really claim that they were dominating the sport. The TAG-Porsche engines were no more effective in the 80's than the Ford-Cosworth engines in the 70's, the Honda engines in the 80's or the Renault engines in the 90's.

It is always interesting to me how so many members here are so willing, and so quick to give Porsche credit for their participation in F1 even known that there are plenty of other manufactures that have achieved just as much, if not more.
