New Owner /need a bit of help

I just picked up my first Ferrari 360/02 and just love the car. Got rid of my GTR to snag this. I couple of question i would like help on. I have search many post for countless hours and have learnt alot (should have read before buying).

many posts on the alarm. Can I just disconnect it somehow? I do not require it. pain in the but sitting at work and my car is beeping at me. Forget to lock it alarm goes off. Lock it then chirps at me sometimes. Showing the motor off or inside the car and the alarm goes off.

Also just found one of the black remotes in the glove box tonight. i don't suppose that would make a difference would it?

The dealer I bought it from(not ferrari) told me the car was sitting for a while and might need a charge. There was a receipt in the record book of a new alarm purchased a year ago.

If I do charge it do I turn the main power off uner the hood before trickle charging? I have had many high end cars and normally over the winter just left them on a trickle charge without disconecting anything and never had any issues..

anyways these might sound like dumb things but I am part of the club who has more money then car smarts (i would take it to the dealer but that is 7 hours away)

 

If you turn off main power under the front hood, then you need to go through start-up procedure after turning power back on. This includes turning ignition key to on, wait for ok, start engine, let it idle for 10 mins or so before driving - it needs to re-learn. Usually you don't need to turn off power at the main switch to connect the trickle charger. I connect mine after every drive without doing anything.

Welcome to the Ferrari world, Wheelies. That's a fine automobile you got there. This is one of the better places to be as an owner, lots of resource and knowledge.
It's good you have the second black remote, they're expensive and have to be paired to the car to work. Do you also have the red one?
For a trickle charger nothing needs to be disconnected - but DO check with the manufacturer of the trickle charger whether that is OK, since some chargers are misled if the car uses some power during the charging cycle (for instance, the alarm will use some power even if the car is off). Only if you use a quick charger you might want to consider disconnecting, to avoid too much voltage on the car's sensitive electronics, for aforementioned reasons. Never leave the battery connected while charging using a charger with more than 4-5 amps of charging power.
Is the alarm an original unit or aftermarket? I assume it is original. The siren has a battery in it that can do dead especially if the car is left sitting for a prolonged period, it is there to power the siren if the vilain trying to steal your belongings or tow your car disconnects the battery in an attempt to kill the siren. The battery in the siren drains if the main battery is empty or disconnected, and goes dead. The original alarm is supposed to chirp at you - if it doesn’t, the siren battery is bad. If the alarm annoys you it is possible to take it out but the insurance might frown upon that action, did you require an alarm for the insurance?

I happen to like alarms because I live in a city and it does work well as a deterrent for petty thieves. I would hate it if someone would find out my F-car is without alarm and steal interior bits out of it and such. None of the cars with alarms had break-ins over the past 10 years I lived here, something I cannot say for my cars that did not have one. But I like an alarm only if it's dumb - doors locked with remote, alarm on; doors opened with remote, alarm off. No auto re-arm or having to lock and unlock again before starting the car, etc.

Yes I do have the red one as well. I'll try and do the trickle charge tonight and see if that helps.....Just got to work and again my alarm was going off after I set it. Nothing better the standing outside your ferrari trying to set an alarm.

I have a red toggle switch on the inside of my car on the right side. I am trying to get a hold of the old owner to see what that is for.Maybe that could be a cause for this issue

 

Definately keep up with the red and two blacks, that's the full set and the red is the Master, don't carry it....

Find the Owners Manual on the internet and download it......

You have the main battery in the car of course then the alarm system itself has a little tiny battery.......that can go bad...

 

Congrats on your purchase, and I'm sure you'll love the car once you get this annoying bit with the alarm sorted out. You said you found a receipt for a new alarm that was installed about a year ago. Did you consider going to the shop that installed the alarm and trying to get them to figure out what's going on with it? Assuming it is an after-market alarm, if the shop is not local, you should at least know the brand of the alarm, and perhaps you could find a local shop that sells that type of alarm system. With that car, you are certainly better off with an alarm than without one.

As for the trickle charger, while they are good for "topping up" a battery, they really don't provide a good charge to one that is dead. You'd be much better off just taking the car out for a nice long ride, maybe an hour or two, and letting the alternator charge it up for you. Otherwise, have a shop that is familiar with the battery removal and reinstallation procedure on these cars take it out, test it, and if it's going bad, replace the battery for you. If the battery won't hold a proper charge, you'd be much better off replacing it now than fooling around. Batteries are not that expensive compared to other problems a bad one can cause.

 

ok thanks for some input. I drove the car 4 hours staright after I picked it up. I can't see how my main battery is dead. I will check with the place he bought the alarm and see if they can shed some light.

Can I assume the red toggle switch in the car is an aftermarket part? Some guy mentioned it could be a valet to switch off the alarm???

 

Good question to ask the alarm company. I don't remember seeing a red toggle switch in any of the 360's I've been in. Usually, the valet switch is hidden somewhere, not just right out there in the open, but you never know.

The main battery may not be dead, but it may also not be holding a full charge. The only way to tell is to put it on a tester that runs a load on the battery and determines whether it is good or not. Test is simple, and many places will do it for nothing or cheap.

Would someone know if I can just disconnect it? As long as I can just lock the doors that is cool with me.

 

Check with our sponsor Ricambi America, they can look at that Part number and maybe get your instructions........good it was at least dealer installed, although I thought there was an integral anti theft/immobiliser from the Factory.

 

The behavior you describe isn't normal. If I don't arm the alarm and walk away it arms itself after a period of time but it doesn't start sounding. If it is doing that, you have some other problem.

Maybe you can disconnect that kit if it is an after market but that doesn't remove the immobilizer that is integrated into the ECU. There are a couple of companies that can do it but I don't know anyone who has had it done. Let's face it, you simply push the button when you get to the car. It unlocks the doors and disarms the alarm. No fuss no muss.

 

Sorry boys bare with. looks like all the manuals I got with the car are for a 2000 not sure if that matters much compared to the 02. I heard there were basically the same. Anyways aparently I need an converter kit to trickle charge the car that should have come with it but did not. In the picture attached,the 2 black knobs am I correct to assume that is where I will be charging the car?

In the manual it should show you where the optional trickle charger location was but that seems like that's the spot. The two lines you see there are the low and high pressure a/c lines.

 

heres where you need to install the leads if you are using a basic off the shelf charger or ontop of the battery itself.

Thanks, Sounds like I might have more of an issue then I first thought. Apparently I should not beable to start my car the way I have been. Currently. I put the key in wait 3 seconds and start. Ferrari dealer just told me I should have to put the key in the push the button on the fob then start it to disable the imobilizer....

He said I should bring it in. Anyways trying a new theory. i have a trickle charge on the battery, and will try the new fob that was purchase with the new alarm in hopes that the one was faulty and causing all my grief...when the alrms was going crazy i couldn't turn it off so i used the red one and i guess I should not of done that....

Looks like i'm off on a road trip. Hope I make it before the snow falls

 

There is no difference between the red and black fobs after the red is used to program the Alarm ECU to accept a new set of three fobs. There are a bunch of old wive's tales on fobs and the alarm system.

Search clone in tech Q and A and read the last version of the programming document for better understanding of the alarm system and fobs.

Ok thanks....weird thing is I don't need to push the button on the remote to start it....I turn key to position 2 wait r seconds and the car has started everytime!

In regards to your questions we did supply and install a new alarm and remote kit for Automaxx. At the time of installation we performed a full alarm system cycle test and it passed, which means the alarm was working as it was designed to at that time. However I did go back into our notes and found out that the instrument cluster did require replacement and Automaxx told us they were going to ship the cluster to California for repairs… Perhaps after the “repairs” the cluster was not configured properly? If it was not, this can cause all kinds of different problems with the vehicle. Also as I mentioned the other day I told you if the car believes something (door, hood, and or bonnet) are open this can cause your problem as well.



It is very difficult to try and diagnose a problem of this magnitude over the phone or by email and you CANNOT disconnect the alarm. The alarm is also part of the vehicles immobilizer system, if you try to disconnect it the vehicle will not start – this is why you need to push the button on the remote before you can start the car. I realize you are located far away and this will continue to drive your crazy but we need the vehicle here for in order to perform proper diagnoses and repair.

No, those are to recharge your AC. The knob is inside the trunk on the firewall, passanger side. Look near the top but against the carpet the black knob isn't obvious.

 

1 complete day no issue. I decided to put a new car battery in first to avoid doing the 7 hour trip to my dealer. Day 1. NO red light on while driving and Alarm is set with no issues.

Still strange the imobilzer is not working. I am assuming 1 of the previous owners must of figured out a way to by pass this. Anyways peace of mind being able to arm the car and not have it go off.
