    My car. Best guess is that a valve seat came out of the cylinder head and then it was all over after that. It's a very rare failure. Luckily the cylinder sleeve saved the block. We'll need to replace the damaged parts (including a new oil pump because it's too hard to clean) and then clean the entire engine.

    Also, because the engine hydrolocked with the piston hole, we'll inspect all the rods on the one side.

    Luckily it's all repairable. A new Enzo engine is $200K+.

    Jeez man...sorry bout your luck. Good luck with the repairs...

    Any potential help from Ferrari due to the "rareness" of the failure? I'm guessing warranty is long gone by now...

    I was there that day but I missed out on the horror. Got some pics of you at the pumps first thing in the morning after I got out of the shower. The life of a SCRAMP Volunteer. But always worth it. Was sad to hear about the engine, but happy now that it can be fixed.

    how would an engine change work? do they have some engines laying around, do they build a complete new one?

    I got more or less the same problem few years ago on a murcielago, lamborghini took a (large) part of the repair, but finally we sold the car, 82 000 euros costs to change the engine, certainly less than what you will face! good luck.

    I'm not a manufacturer, but I'm assuming that they would have made a few dozen extra engine blocks and all components for replacements. I think the DOT requires all manufacturers to keep replacements for every part for XX years (10-20?).

    That's perhaps the scariest part of buying a $105k Murcielago: the replacement parts would be in the hundreds of thousands for engine, body panels, etc. Back when I was trying to break into the parts business, Murci front bumper w/assembly pieces was $15k+ and a rear $18k+.

    I wonder if some cylinders run hotter than others do and that in some way contributed to the failure. That piston is a sight to behold.

    Curiously early BB Chevrolet aluminum cylinder heads also suffered problems with the valve seats wandering around a bit. Though connecting rods were actually a weaker link in that case.

    I don't know you but I'm reasonably impressed by your levelheadedness and ability to take this in stride. I would probably have had a minor heart attack. I hope the repairs will go quickly for you.

    wow, thanks for sharing. I've seen the same sort of results with a broken valve spring, I assume those were all in tact?

    if a new one is $200k, then absolutely it can be fixed! :D

    it appears from the picture that the seat-or a major portion of the seat without a valve-is still present. The other seats are locatedd 'appx" where they are supposssed to be...
    What IS obvious, is that a valve has become separated from its stem...
    These are-I am guessing-inertially welded, multipiece valves???
    If so, this is not so rare an occurrance as one might guess...
    Incidental, catastrophic failure is a statistical reality...

    Are the rods PANKLs???
