Hi Graeme, The sprocket is not on all the way as the shaft to drive the pump fits into it (can be seen in your picture). When you say that it's an interference fit, I take it that the end of the crankshaft is splined and that the sprocket slides (he laughs) onto these splines? McGraths do not have a puller available and offered to do the job for around £120+VAT etc. But the issue is that they are busy until sometime well into October. Any pics of the crank end would be appreciated if you took any when doing your car.
I don't have the car here, but need info on make & type of compressor; a source for parts would be helpful too. (front bearing) Thanks, Jack.
Jack I can't let you drown so in case MIE or BillMcGraths are very busy (which indeed they are at the moment) here is a contact: ask Marcello candini at Candini's in Modena, he can be emailed in English and he will either know or get the response from his father. [email protected] best regards, Marc
Thanks Marc, I shot them a mail in my best Italian; hope they can decipher it! Somehow I think it is of the same type as used in my 308, which is, I think, from Borletti, but before ordering parts I'd rather be sure. Difficult to order parts for a car that's not with me, and a compressor that is yet at another address. Wish I had a parts manual.
Well I seem to recall it is a York ac device but not sure. repro parts manuals can be bought easily and cheaply via MIE or Ebay. Good luck! MS
York originally. Still made today by another company and installed in Volvo front loaders, so should be no problem to get hold of spare parts.
Jack, I've attached a couple of pages from my Khamsin parts manual. Hope it helps. Rick . . . . Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Thanks Gentlemen! I shouldn't have a problem getting spares locally even (clutch/pulley assy and bearing) if it's York, but if Borletti it'll be a different story. The head cap seemed ribbed on this compressor, while the York's is flat. I'll see if I can organise a pic of it.
Pic of the compressor (on the right) It appears from the drawing in the partscatalogue that the York head is flat, whereas the head on this compressor appears to have some ribs in it. If anyone can positively identify it, I'd be most grateful! Jack. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Hi Jack The Aircon compressor is a York. common to early Mercs etc of the same era. The comp is the small capacity version. and I believe you can still buy them new. I have a freind whos fitted a different type and all he was have the clutch assemply drilled to take the waterpump drive and make a bolt up adaptor that aligned the center lines. Find an Aircon overhaul place and tke the York they will have a pump to suit your needs. Cheers Graeme
I have a rare original Maserati press-kit for the Khamsin for sale on Ebay. Please have a look (describtion is in German & English language!): http://cgi.ebay.de/Maserati-Khamsin-Presskit-1970s-/140460248420?pt=Kataloge_Prospekte&hash=item20b4154d64 Happy Bidding! Ciao! Walter
Hi Walter I will put on my watch list to see how it goes, some one needs to grab this as they are reasonably rare. I spent a year putting a set togther like this including a hand written quote for a car sold in the US. They are excellent reference for restoration especially when putting trin back in and the location of screws. Best Regards Graeme
Hello all: Jack: just received this email from a Khamsin connoisseur regarding your question: FYI. Hi Marc, York compressors are available in Europe "off th shelf" and you can order them from the Hella catalogue (for whatever reason). On the matter of Walter's brochure and press kit yes grab it: a good buy! Here are two photos: an unknown Japanese Khamsin repainted yellow, just found this recently, no idea about chassis number, tried contacting the Japanese club once but got nowhere so: if anyone in Japan is looking at this I would very much appreciate help in tracking down the 31 cars (if memory serves right don't have time to look it up now) sold there and curious to know which one this is: domo arigato itashimass The second photo is not the same car: this is AM120US1160 which I found earlier this year in rural Illinois and which was sold by Ivan Ruiz in Atlanta to a German enthusiast who just informed me that the car has arrived in Germany and he will start the full restoration very soon: he seems very serious about it and is an engineer so viel gluck A.! best regards, Marc Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Great colour Shame they painted the bumpers the same colour it looses some of the detail. Cheers Graeme
Yep! Great find! Thanks for posting. The only other ad I ever saw with a Khamsin is the one for the ski rack which I posted here before. Graeme: Yes several cars have had the bumpers painted in body color and it just is not correct. best regards, Marc
Hi Marc Been 'out of the loop' for a few weeks so just noticed this picture! It's definitely my car, and I'd like to say I was responsible for the photoshoot but it seems the bodyshop have been moonlighting behind my back. Mind you, I fully support their behaviour and know they would have taken good care of the car. I'll just request they get her back in the car when it's finished, and make sure she's not so over dressed!! Doug
Hello Doug! Hah! I am very relieved as I was worried that I had offended you by posting that photo and had visions of a bodyshop employee fired etc etc! Not so overdressed LOL excellent I guess she won't be needing this then?! As I said you find all sorts of things on the net! best regards, Marc Image Unavailable, Please Login
Just a general question to put out there as I'm having the engine rebuilt I was wondering what you guys did in terms of adding fuel additives to unleaded petrol? My car I know has been run for some time on just unleaded fuel. But I seem to recall some think that an additive is needed to replace the lead and those that use the 95/98 ron neat. I ask as during the strip down 2 of the exhaust guides werre found to be damaged, could be just down to wear but as it's apart I just wanted to make sure I do all that is needed. Any thoughts you guys may have would be very welcome. Bal
Ask your engine builder to use the approriate valve seat material. He probably will anyway. There's no reason then to use a lead addititve. Bob S.
Hi Bal I was probably under the miss conception that the valave seat material was suitable for Unleaded fuel. However I know that early pre Khamsin Masearti engines were not suitable. The US went to Unleaded in 68 so in "theory" cars sold in the US would have the harder seats. I would love some clarification on this. Regards Graeme
Hi Walter Well done! Seems a good price for the press kit I would have thought a bit more. Regards Graeme
Hi Graeme, thanks! The price is 100% OK for me and the kit goes to a Maserati enthusiast from Switzerland. Ciao! Walter
