Hi Walter. Interesting and good to see an enthusiat bought it and it wasnt just speculated on weather thats a barometer to the Maserati market remains to be seen. Cheers Graeme
Hi Graeme, Yep there were some lengthy talks in the club UK on the subject before I joined but I don't know the outcome. As you say there doesn't appear to be a definitive statement on the subject. When the rebuild begins I'll talk to my engine guys and discuss the valve seats with them. Especially the current condition as the car has been run on unleaded for a few years now. Not sure if the factory would have bothered using different seat materials depending on the market for such a low volume car, but you can never rule anything out. If anyone does know the answer to the unleaded question then perhaps you could share it with us all.... Bal
Hi Bob, Just whether a standard khamsin could be run on unleaded. Not that it would bother anyone rebuilding, just those who have no need to be taking their engines apart. Hope I didn't offend with my question, just a big learning curve for newbies like me. Bal
Cheers Paul, I intend to as soon as it's back. Just awaiting parts to come in now and the rebuild can commence. I've got my eye on that Khamsin meet in 2012 that Marc mentioned. Bal
FWIW I rebuilt my Khamsin engine 20 years ago and have driven it 35000 miles since. I left the valve seats alone and changed the valves to Stainless steel from Manley. The valves were checked every 5000 miles and only needed to adjust them at 20000 miles and then only four valves. Other things I would recommend is balance the crank and all componets. Bolt false heads to the block before any machine work is done. These blocks are quite flexible and distort when they are apart. If I were to do a V8 today I would get the block strengthing kit for Dr. Doll. I have also had very good results with the Total Seal rings. They are more important on the six cylinder engines with F.I. because the vacuum remains constant even at 40000 mile. This is key to the F.I not getting rich
Hi All some one was after these they are bora but they also fit Khamsins US ebay item number 150447318918 Cheers Graeme
I am looking at adding another Maserati to my small stable and am leaning toward a Khamsin, preferably an automatic in european configuration. I am willing to pay a top price for a correct car. I like original cars with original leather, carpet and mouse hair, but would consider a high quality restored car depending on who restored it. Any leads would be greatly appreciated. I am located in Seattle. contact me off line at [email protected] Ciao, FGM
Hi all, could I get a brief step by step description of the removal of the air pump and ancillary equipment for a late Khamsin. Thanx in advance. Ciao, Rolf
Hello Rolf: I am sure someone here will be able to advise you if not I will find one for you. best regards, Marc
Hello Frank: Have been busy with other things so to answer your post belatedly there are or were three automatics on the market in the US (you don't want one from Europe and there are practically just a handful of them here anyway). -Obviously the car advertised on MIE's website which is in your half of the country. -Chicagoclassiccars had a white one which had been in Japan AM120192, it needs its colors straightened out. It is probably still in the Chicago area, can find out if you want. -Peter Sweeney of Forza Motorsports in new England has or had AM120US1200 the car which was owned by an enthusiast in a northern province of Canada and now has full bumper conversion. best regards, Marc
Dear all, I am planning a restoration of the interior of an early 74 and would appreciate any information which might be helpful in this context. Type of leather, carpet, upholstery, door interior, switches etc. I wonder if you could help me finding out which original colours were used for the interior of the Khamsins. There is the original external colours on your website, Marc, do you have the same for the interior aswell? Best regards, Otto
Guten tag and welcome Otto: I do not as of now have that but can ask sig. Cozza and his new assistant. Do you intend to stick with your car's original colors or go for different ones? The factory will supply you with the details of your car for free....now. It could soon change so best to do it as soon as possible if you haven't yet. Will be glad to help: email me at [email protected] Last but not least I am curious as to which car you have: if you could either let us know the chassis number here or if you prefer discretion you can just email it to me I keep information confidential if requested. best regards, Marc
Hello Otto... I have attached some info that MAY or MAY NOT be of help to you in your Khamsin interior restoration... Good luck and keep us apprised of your progress... BTW... I had spent considerable time in Germany during my youth, not all that far from Karlsruhe, namely Walldurn/Hardheim im Odenwald! Just got back from my annual pilgrimager to the Classic Show in Padova. The only Khamsin I could find for sale was this one. The seller is http://www.garagedaytona.com/ I couldn't get access to the chassis number - does anyone know the car? It was in quite good condition, although the paintwork was poorly presented (a proper detail would have done it wonders) and I'm not at all sure about that interior - it doesn't look original to me, although it had plenty of patina - the two tone brown leather doesn't complement the dark blue exterior in my opinion. Can anyone tell me the standard radio fitment in UK Khamsins? I've seen one fitted with a Blaupunkt Goslar - Bal , was that yours?? I can get a secondhand unit quite easily, I just want to get it as original as possible. Thanks, Doug
I remember seeing that car maybe 6? years ago at a Maserati club function at Lime Rock. The guy was really thrilled with how the Ostrich interior had turned out. It wasn't a particularly clean or sharp car at that time but gave the impression of a good driver with that wild interior. I think he made some other changes to the interior as well. That was an expensive interior job. I'm sorry to see another that's left the USA. I suppose they'll all be gone eventually. Looks like the US dollar is in the toilet for the long haul. Bob S.

Hi Bob: Well I am not happy to see so many leave your country and come over here because once we get below a certain Khamsin headcount in the US they will slip off the radar of all but the most die hard enthusiasts...but there is no reason why US buyers can't understand these are fantastic cars reaching the end of the undervalued period as well as Europeans do. They need to be seen at shows (without the US bumpers n'est ce pas Mr Mike Bumperovich Demyanovich!) as people are really struck by them in person and I cans till remember the effect mine had in and around Cavallino 2005. best regards, Marc
I must have some pictures like that too somewhere? It was at Limerock when Mateo Panini came over for a visit and the Vintage races were being held. I think the interior color is just fine for black? Maybe anthricite would be a little better but black Khamsins with a proper paint job really look sharp. The steering wheel IMHO is just awfull. Ditto on the shift lever boot. A bit too cute. You could easily fix that though. The seats and door inserts are OK with me. I think I sat in it and man you could really feel the bumps on that leather. Not exactly comfortable but definetly exotic. I guess you'd need Ostrich driving gloves & shoes as well ... I'm not sure it really matters because I don't know how collectable these cars will ever be anyway. If they were pulling $200k then I wouldn't want a non original car becaue of the investment risk. But these cars can't even begin to sell for their restoration expenses so to me they're just very nice cars so enjoy them! Bob S.
Doug, Mine has an old style Kenwood unit (I think as I haven't seen the inside for 6 months). Not sure it's original, but was fitted when I bought it off Peter Rae. The reviews of the period talk of Blaupunkt units, such as Berlin etc. Personally I wouldn't be fussed so long as it is of the period type with two knobs rather than the modern facia. But that's only because I don't turn it on much. I take it you are going to upgrade the speakers as the original are weak. I know from a Classic & Sportscar review of Perry Aldred's car that it had a Sharp unit. ( recognised it as I had the same in a Capri when a student.) Bal I'll see what else I can find
Hello everyone, I am contemplating khamsin ownership And was delighted to stumble upon this forum! Do any of you know the history of this car at FA automobile http://www.fa-automobile.com/detail-vente.php?langue=an&id=31&v=1721 It seems a euro-spec. 5 speed. How difficult would it be to source a replacement engine and gearbox plus ancillaries, a/c etc? I am in London and am due to see the yellow Car 409 next week. Will post any further news! Very best regards to you all and sorry for the clumsy link. Mark Oliver
Mark: I may not have much time for this forum right now but a very wise and knowledgeable Khamsin owner just mentioned your post to me. Please concentrate on this, I write it for your own good. Do not do this. The car has obviously crashed hard there is so much repair work to do so much missing to buy so much labor that it would have to be worth ten times as much as a TOP price Euro Khamsin in Europe to be worthwhile. yes Khamsin prices are going up in Europe (in the US they are completely under the radar) but nevertheless this, I am sad to say, is a parts car, no more. We have all considered doing things like this. I did in 1998. But do yourself a favor and look elsewhere. if you have cash and space then buy this one as a parts source car. But please believe me. best regards, Marc Sonnery Maserati Khamsin Registry
Thank you Marc for your sage advice! I will look elsewhere. I intend to consult McGrath Maserati before any purchase to save My sweat, nerves and wallet. Rest assured I will supply any details To you when the beauty is eventually found. Regards. Mark
