When I had someone ask how I could afford it, I made up stories. I would tell them that I was a porn star, professional golfer, won the lottery, owned strip clubs, was a pimp. I once told someone that I was a firefighter and saved my money, made smart decisions and he said "yeah right, no firefighter can afford a Ferrari".

Exactly.... it's my brother's car, or I don't know, it's been in the family for a long time.

If a stranger asked what my income is I would not tell them.

If a stranger asked how much my car or house cost I would not hesitate to tell them.

There is a subtle difference between the two questions. One is private information that is not easy to discover from public sources. The other can be easily divined by anyone with an internet connection.

I think first just turning around and asking the guy the same question is appropriate. Then by the time he answers the light changes and it's time to drive off.

    These cars cost money?

The dealership gave it to me?

The fruits of a good education. ;)

I'm lovin' all these answers. I'm going to use them. I don't care about telling the price I paid for my car amongst friends. I paid 24K. It was just the area I was in and the person that was asking me. No teeth, tats on his face, neck, and arms. I don't think he was going to offer to buy my car. Odds are that he is probably a good guy. But if your hanging out on the duck pond, and you look like a duck, quack like a duck, well....you know what they say. Maybe if they were stopped next to me I might of told them instead of having to yell two lanes away from me. Nah, I don't think so. They can just look it up on the Internet for themselves. Believe me, it was no big deal. I don't need to see Dr. Phil over it or anything. I was just a little stunned. It was the first time I was asked THIS question by a stranger at a light. My first thought was, "What would my fellow FChatters say?". I love answering the normal stoplight questions. "You wanna trade cars?". "How fast will it go?". "Is that really a Ferrari?". "Hey Magnum, where's TC and Higgins?". I personally would never ask anyone how much they paid for their car or their house. Thats just me.

Most people think our Ferrari is new so I tell them it cost $110,000 in 1992. That is what they want to hear.

I like the "just stole it" comment though

Come on. Are you kidding. In Los Angeles I think the majority of Fireman, both City and County, ride around in chauffeur driven cars. Hell, I think their fire engines may even be chauffeur driven with crash boxes full of Grey Poupon and Dom Perignon. Here, Doctors, Lawyers, and Stock Brokers, consult their Fireman. :D.

Then he really wouldn't believe me. 28 YO machinist with a '97 F355. People don't realize how much these cars have come down in price. That coupled with the fact that many people would believe '90s and up Ferraris could be just a couple years old makes them think they still cost 6 digits.
