then a few hundred miles later and a few months an old hose started leaking and when I drained the fluid this came out.

some nasty rust water. I figured the water would be clean and green with antifreeze. it wasnt.
and the second pic is of the fitting that completely fell apart when we tried to remove it due to corrosion.

I guess i was just bummed because I spent 6k on the 30k mile service and the shop let this slip by.
what would you guys do? confront the shop? demand something? or just let it go and move on.

Lots of antifreeze is orange instead of green nowadays, and there's very little to rust (mostly aluminum) in the cooling system. The broken fitting is common with 348s. Fix it and go on with your life. Recommend against "confronting" the shop.

this happened a while ago and I'm positive it was not orange antifreeze, it was not greasy and it was not bitter.
I also did not confront the shop, I was just wondering what others might do in my situation.

I agree with Bruce. If that was green AF what made it rust out is the big question. In my 348 racecar I ran water and water wetter no AF and never had a lick of corrosion. If this was a few hundred miles and a few months after the service the real question is who did the service before? Even after years of sitting green AF is still green in these cars. In my cars not I only use extended life AF which is orange. That blown out fitting is common.

Wow, that sucks. After spending $6k you still had some old hoses prone to leakage. Seems like all coolant hoses should be changed during major service like that. I'd call and ask if that hose was replaced. See what they say. Maybe it's time for some of those super silicone hoses that Ricambi sells.

That looks like rusty water to me. :(:(

Here is Oz, we have green and red coolant. I have never seen orange coolant which leads me to believe that its old green coolant that was not flushed out/replaced when they did the major service. :(:(

Did the pull the fuel tank to change the cam belt??? One would think that most of the coolant would have been lost/dumped when they/if they pulled the engine out.:eek:

Perhaps they did pull the engine, didnt flush the old crap out, then refilled with water hence you have what you have in your cooling system. :(:(

All the more reason I do my own work.

Though, it is common for that fitting to fail.

I guess we have it good over here---After a major service, our local shop cleans the motor, wipes everything down, makes it look good as new. They pull, prod and inspect nearly hose, clamp, nut, fitting they can get there hands on while the motor is out of the car. Obviously, your shop doesn't do any of those things..Can't imagine that fitting looked great during the service...Not saying a shop should or needs to, just glad my local shop takes the extra time to do that. I think my shop would of caught some of that...

You can confront the shop but I'm going to be honest with you... it's also your responsibility to know what you're paying for. If you don't see "antifreeze" on what you paid for, then question it at the time you're picking it up. For 6K of work, I would have.

If you paid for a 30K service and you didn't see a fluid change on the invoice, well.... you paid for it.

If you get an invoice and all it says is "30K service" and a price, then for sure question the shop on what they did and didn't do and why. Otherwise, how do you know what you paid for?

Why not 'approach' the shop and understand what did/didn't happen. There's some chance they'll offer to help with the situation but, most importantly, you'll know exactly what you're dealing with.

I worked as a mechanic when I was kid and we all make mistakes. They might have just missed it. If it is on the receipt and not there (which it looks like it wasn't) approach them and I'm sure they will try to correct it some how.

First thing I would do is try to figure out why the antifreeze is all rusty! This wasn't a simple "forgot to change the fluid" scenario otherwise it would still look normal. Any signs of what may have caused this? I'd be furious.

Maybe these guys should do a "group buy" on some green antifreeze...

You own too many guns. There is no way the Socialist State of CA would let you in. You would be turned away at the border; in fact, I have inside information that your picture is hanging in every border station. :D

All baseless rumor started by a rouge Stooge on a walk about, suffering from oxygen deprivation.

Boulder is the place where Californians come when they have had enough of the Heathens on the coast... 25 square miles surrounded by reality. The color of the sky in our pink fuzzy world is quite different here. Then come the 110 MPH winds with by 3-4 feet of snow and they all go running back west telling lies of gun packing Barbarians they saw on horse back in the mountains. Its a common occurance, all nonsense gibberish.

He will be all right when he is back on flat ground for a while and gets some oxygen back in his blood stream.
