I am taking my California to Mid Ohio this weekend. I'm simply looking for suggestions on tire pressure for a drivers education day. Normally my guess would be +2 or 3 pounds above normal pressure.

I can't remember what mine was when I tracked it, but the instructor checked it before and after and all was good. It would have been whatever "normal" is, I guess! Sorry not to be of more help. I bet some others will know better.

Have a great time! I had a blast and approach every curve in a whole new way now.:)

It has been over 20 years since I was on a shorter track with a 78 Porsche 928. As you well know the California goes way better and stops way way better. I am looking forward to it!

This was my first time, and I must say, I am very spoiled. It handled beautifully and the instructor thought so too. Would love your impressions after since you've done it before, albeit in a "bug." ;)

928 is risky business, not a bug

    Hi,

I normally spend time at trackdays 40-50 times a year, and my experience is that you need to take air out of the tires, or you will damage them. The preassure will increase as you heat the tires on the track, causing the tire to expand and you will have excessive wear on the middle of the tire. The increase in preassure varies from car to car, and depending on air temperature etc.

My advice would be to stick to the original preassure figure. To do this you would probably need to deflate the tyre during your trackday. Get hold of a tyrepreassuregauge ( cheap thing), do max three laps, check preassure and deflate to original setting, do this to or three times and you should be ok.

Just remember that you need to fill the tires before driving any great distance after, or you will have excessive wear on the outsides of the tires...

    Enjoy.....

Run them "normal." As stated, they must be checked after each session to let air out as they heat up.

we recently did a track event at
Mosport with a group of experienced racers - it's recommended that you go OVER by 10kpa over the norm to protect the tires during a track event - it is necessary to protect the sidewalls of the tires from collapsing and forming bulges as you go along corners

if there is not enough pressure in the tire, it will blister the sides as the sidewalls will 'collapse' during corners as they will be taking all the force

Please make sure your tires are mantained around 2.1 -2.2 bar.
If you drive your car hard it will overheat real fast. I had my 458 going round the Malaysian Sepang F1 track 2 weeks ago... tire pressure hit 2.4 bar and this was the result.
Had to get a new set of tire. The original set were P Zeros have gone with PS2 now.

Mine got up to 2.8 (42 psi) today with no trouble. I do plan to take a little out of the front tomorrow to see if it helps cut the understeer down. I only have 5/32 on the rear and 3/32 on the front tread depth.

sorry I meant to say 10% (not 10 kpa) over the recommended ie- if the rec. is 32 kpa - then should go over by 3kpa to a total of 35-36kpa

The weekend is over, and photos will appear here late this week I hope. Today I reduced the cold tire pressure from 35 front & 32 rear to 32 all the way around. After a few Mid Ohio laps the temps came up to 42 all around and the understeer pretty much went away. The car suddenly was easier to turn with a slight lift in the turn, way cool! I got up to 144 mph by the second session today at the end of the long straight, braking a bit early at the 500 foot mark with plenty of room to spare. And there were plenty of compliments on the cool sounds the California makes all around the track. I calculated about 5 to 5.5 mpg each session. This is way too much fun! Now I have to wait for another session next year. Maybe race tires??

Rick ... again photos will be coming, one very cool with a beautiful yellow Porsche where it belongs, right behind me.
