So now there are 6 factory LMs? I thought there were only 5... I know its a thread hijack... but you seem to be pretty damn knowledgeable and I am curious.

No problem from me on the hijack. If you have a lot of interest in the McLaren F1 you would also enjoy this thread in the Showroom forum - McLaren F1 pics - which is closing in on 1,000 replies.

To answer your question here - there were always 6 LMs. One was the prototype McLaren built in late 1995 which doesn't always get counted. It is chassis 'XP1 LM' and is still retained by the factory today.

The 5 production LM's were built in mid-1996 and had chassis numbers LM1 through LM5. Three of them went to Brunei originally (LM1, LM4 & LM5) with the first two of them painted Black/Grey and the last of the trio in the traditional orange. LM2 was orange and went to a Japanese customer who still owns that car today. LM3 was also orange and originally sold to a gentleman from Scotland, then sold to an American in Massachusetts and in late 2004 was sold to its current owner, Ralph Lauren.

Back to the prototype - Ron Dennis has apparently promised it to Lewis Hamilton should he win 3 Formula One World Championships for McLaren. If you don't follow Formula One, he's currently leading this years Championship by a handful of points and has one in the bag from the 2008 season. Talk about a performance incentive. :)

Here's a photo of it on display inside the McLaren Technology Centre.

So sad, the F1 looks dated now.

I think the F1 is one of those very rare cars that will never look outdated.

Agree once again. The cars are stunning. I know of a 1998 Mclaren F1 blk/blk available but the asking price is in the vicinity of $3M to $3.1M although I don't know if its been federalized for the US yet. Apparently this is a $100K job.
