Transmission Failure Light, Drive Slowly To the Dealer

Test drove a 2005-612 today, soon as we got in the car and tried to go into reverse, we got a "Transmission Failure Light, Drive Slowly to the Dealer".

This happened a few times during our starting and stopping. Was this due to the used car salesmens and my lack of understand of how the 612 works during start up?

I test dove the car and it seamed fine, this problem only accrued after start up and reverse.

We are having the car checked out at an authorized service center tomorrow.

    Any input would be helpful…

    Best regards,
    Chett. L

I had the same thing. The problem is an incompletely charged battery. When the battery on the 612 is even slightly discharged(not driven in as little as 1-2 weeks) the whole computer program goes wild. Use the battery tender as much as possible and if the car is trading hands, install a new battery.

Found out today that the Transmission Sensor switch needs to be replaced. The car does have the battery tender.

Thank your your input, I'll keep an eye on the battery.

These cars were recalled in 2008 with a transmission sensor problem. You can find out if your car had the sensor replaced by calling FNA. Having said that, my sensor was replaced or at least the records indicate that it was and the transmission failure light still went on several times this summer.

I had the same problem and it was one of the f1 hoses breaking. A very expensive hose, $2400.00 for the hose alone. I was stuck on a freeway offramp until I was able to get the car going and getting off and it would shut down and not move at all.

Do the OTOs with the revised gearbox still suffer from these problems?

During the pre-car purchase inspection it was determined that the F1 shifting Lever mechanism was broken and needed replacement. This broken mechanism is what caused the malfunction light to appear.

This was fixed by the owner during our negotiation.

The dealer recommends that I gently lift up the lever and put it into reverse mode and use the Paddle Shifter to engage the vehicle into drive instead of using the F-1 forward- Reverse Lever However, this is not mandatory just a suggestion by the dealer.

I don't think so. Mine has been trouble free so far.

The only real problem I've had on my OTO is the fuel level sensor, which is now being replaced for the second time. Apparently they came out with an improved sensor in January 2010.

They are sensitive on the battery issue-- when mine is in the garage, it's on external power. Always.

Glad it wasn't an ECU but never heard of the switch panel dying.
