Shawn- While the engine is being rebuilt, I would definitely consider using Dave Helms' kits for hoses and his gold plated electrical wiring and connector kit. Once done, you will never have to worry about those components again. Worth it, especially since you intend to keep the car forever. Taz Terry Phillips
Sure, but does anyone have a manual on how to reattach a headliner to a 308 GTBi. It baffles me that one of the most popular models is supported by the manuals from earlier and later year models.
They only changed the Worshop/Parts Manuals with major tech changes.. For my 1976 -77 308GTBs (a totally new body style!!!) I use the Work Shop Manual for the non catalyst 308GT4 engine. For everything else I use the 1978 Parts Manual, which isn't accurate 100% as it shows all the newly added catalyst exhaust system. It is what it is.. In those years Ferrari was really struggling with Labor Unions and selling cars and trying to survive. Publications were not a priority!!
I did these warranty engines while an engine builder for a franchised dealer... FWIW-the consumption issues largely were a function of poor/incorrect ring and ring land design, coupled with unforseeen vaccuum issues in the crankcase ventilation circuit. The consumption issue which you have complained of/described WILL NOT BE CURED via a top end overhaul. However, modern viton valve sea;ls will dramatically aid in off throttle consumption, as well as detonation issues(dropped/separated inertially welded multi piece valve stems, and cracked liners in #2, #3 at the area just below the deck line, and just above top land... this is the unknown, and unfound coolant burning... a strict by product of all deficient design issues referenced above, (COMBINED with likely the EGR valve not correctly set at 1" of vac at 800 RPM idle with plugs pulled-CK manual for EXACT terms and specs!) I am willing to wager on this one... Replacement pistons(Wiseco, CP, JE for example) and more modern rings will help aid greatly in this...$125-200.00 per hole with rings, pins, clips-NO LINERS, see LA Sleeve for these... OEM parts are incredibly more expensive, do not solve all of the problems, and are really only moiderately better at reduction of oil consumption...something like 1000-1200 miles/qt., at best??? A silicon bronze guide material with a small nickel content for "work hardening effect" is best suited in my experience as part of the cure as well... Ferrea stainless steel valves are a good start for valves, and a drop to 6mm stems will require n ew springs as well...swapping to a "big" cam is NOT recommended based on overlap issues known to be problematic in Bosch CIS sytem fed engines as a whole... Like I said, for what its worth, Ive done 20-25 of theses....started with the kits from Ferrari, then whole engines, then, we "re-invented the wheel" so to speak...
I believe the Mondial 8 shop manual is the only manual Ferrari printed for 2V FI engines. Correct Parts Manuals are also hard to find. I found out the hard way. Do you have an electronic speedometer that has the sender mounted on the top of the transaxle? Yes CAT 193/80 NO CAT 222/81 There is another Parts Manual for these 308 GTB/Si's but it has the sender mounted on bottom like 222/81. Stephen

I think, having rebuilt my engine last year, you are looking at minimum 15K probably closer to $20K (and maybe more) for complete rebuild and re and re of engine. What is the point of spending 15 grand or even 10 grand and and not getting a complete rebuild top to bottom? You could do the heads and 500 miles down the road you could have a 30 yr old ring fail. If the engines coming out spend the extra 5 or 6 thousand and rebuild the bottom also.
Your shop doesn't know to do a leakdown test to diagnose a compression issue? I'd be looking elsewhere to do major work like this if I were in your position.
