Guys, Whats your recommendation re buying shims for setting cam-valve adjustment? One thread said Alfa and Fiat shims work- true? Cheers Image Unavailable, Please Login
your friendly Volvo dealership has them for $5-$7 a piece. I have a bunch of 2V shims that I can give you so that we can start a traveling 2V valve kit for other fchat members who need to do valve adjustment. After enough of us combine our left over shims, we will have a decent kit for all to use.
When I did the shims on the '78 308, I got some Volvo shims. IIRC, they were for a 244 about the same vintage. I believe there is a cross-reference on the shims in the parts sticky at the top of the 308/328/Mondial forum. You can buy a kit of Volvo shims with assorted sizes for about what a couple of the "Ferrari" shims cost. Another source for individual shims at a reasonable price is Partsource up in Maine.
Ok. Thanks. The tools are enroute. I'll get back to you when I know what i need. The initial-limited check of cam-valve clearance looks like the exhaust is within limits but the intake is too tight. Will do a complete workup and get back to you hoping you have what's needed. Of course what comes out of CCCVIII will then go in "Fchat collection" pot for the next guy's valve adjust job. Cheers
When I went to Napa to get Volvo valve shims for my 1981 308 GTBi, I had to tell them that they were for a 1992 Volvo 240. They didn't have any trouble finding them after I told them that.
Right. Had to do that with another Ferrari part- the radiator bimetal switch. Ferrari charged $95. Napa ('77 Rabbit- $11). Go figure.
Gentlemen, Did the traveling shim kit ever get any traction? I am in need of some odd sizes for my 1980 GTBi (3.87x2, 3.92x1, 3.97x3, 4.07x2, 4.17x1) along with the more traditional .050 increments (3.95x2, 4.05x1). I am about to order the odd ones but they have to come from Italy so I thought I would check. Thanks!
The Fiat crowd at mirafiori.com have maintained a shim exchange for many years - might try them. (But Fiat/Volvol shims won't work for a QV).
I should add that the last time I bought shims from the local Volvo dealer - I think that was back in 2009 - their supply was dwindling! At one time, they stocked a whole pile of sizes on the shelf, but like every business does nowadays, low-volume items like these are disappearing from the shelves (overhead!). In fact, that last order I had, every size (odd ball mind you) I requested had to come in from their main dist. center. It only took a day or two, but was a sign back then, that even these parts are going to be "NLA" one day...
Can someone confirm please if FIAT and Lancia uses the same shims as the 2V 308? After doing some research they are 33mm and used on Fiat 124, X1/9, 128,131, Lancia Beta.
I have Accumulated a lot of this shims from working on my Lancia for years. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Holy crap .... that is a lot of shims ..... But, your 308QV uses smaller shims so the shims are wasted ...
Some of the sizes that I need are no longer available... so looking in to it, besides Volvo, BMW used the same shims on some older vehicles. BMW 1988-1991 E30-M3 (S14 Motor) BMW E28-M5 (S38 Motor) BMW E24-M6. More availability on the Fiat/Lancia shims, even more with Mike's LOL!!!
