Thinking about getting something else to add to the fleet and am thinking 4 doors. Current short list is a Mecedes 450 SEL 6.9, Maserati Quattroporte III or a Rolls Royce Silver Spur. Comments from owners would be appreciated. Will hold out for a well sorted example, not a bargain.

    We've had a W116 300SD, a W126 560SEL, a W126 350SDL, a W140 300SD, a W220 S600, and a W221 S550.

Speaking from that experience, I'd say go for a Silver Spur. Any chance you could spring for a Silver Seraph? From my experience, the W116 feels far too heavy (not surprising for a car of this class), but it felt a bit too floaty. The W126 560SEL is my pick from all years of the Benz sedan.

My boss had a Silver Spur from the 80s (same body as your Bentley) and i dreaded driving it as it had absolutely no road feel. Steering was vague, braking was vage, the only thing that wasnt vague was the size. The Bentley is much better and feels more like a car than the Rolls. I would look for a Merc 6.9, those are seriously cool.

    How about an 500E?

I had a W140 500SEL, prefer that body style, but the electronics in it are junk. Never warmed up to the W126 body style.

E class is still pretty small, I've driven one, the previous owner of my 365 had one (and a SWB 600). Neat, but not that special. Would still prefer the 6.9 if I am going to get another Benz.

My degrees are in mechanical and chemical engineering, if my PhD was in EE, I'd consider it. Still too out there for me, would prefer a DBS (the original) if I was going to get an Aston and those have gone up more than I think they are worth.

I completely agree. The W140 is much better looking than the W126, but it's much less reliable. The W126, while not being a looker, is bulletproof on most accounts.

I'm really thinking about a w126. The guy that works on my BMW can't stop talking about them and is currently restoring three of them for the original owners that don't want to part with them.

I want something comfortable on long trips and lately I've found myself needing a usable rear seat. There is something about 80's MBs that I really like. I want a 560sl also.

Any engines on the w126 to stay away from?

A W126 with AMG body kit looks very nice. You could add a boomerang TV antenna and pretend you are Tony Montana! :)

I like those. Like the cars the bad guy on Miami Vice was driven in.

No it doesn't, but I thought the greatest era was pre-WW2?

Just went to my wife's 25 high school reunion last night, I'm starting to get to the era of getting the cars I liked as a teen.

I'm half way through the cocaine cowboys documentary. They talk about the MB 6.9, they were pretty much disposable to them. One guy's wife wrecked one of their Mercedes into the other because she was mad, he shot at the car then they had both cars crushed and bought new ones. With a personal check from Panama.

I'd go for a 1995 Flying Spur or a 1997-99 Spur - all have a "light" turbo which gives them a much needed boost. I have a 1995 Turbo R (which I believe is the same body as your Mulsanne) and long to have just a little more room in the backseat. I think the late Spurs and Bentley are the absolute best deal these days - very reliable and a hell of a lot of car for the money.

If you think it is big enough, you should look into a Volvo S60.
