http://www.dnaautomotive.com/ckc_dna_june07.pdf All I can say is oh my f***ing god. These guys are nuts - £27,000 for a Ferrari 360 replica when he could have just about bought a cheap end of the market example for £40,000. Is it fair to say that if these guys can afford these type of replicas they could probably get a cheaper/older example of the real thing (or different model) and actually have the real deal. I can't understand this frankly. I understand Cobra replicas but thats because the real things are so rare and so expensive and Cobra replica manufacturing is carried out in almost the same way as the real thing. But these things look truly awful. And the fact that they're wearing all the Ferrari clothing makes me cringe. Am I being too harsh!!?
Perhaps a tad. If they like them then let them to it. I have no issues with replicars excecpt when they are really ugly. A couple of them in the article are but I have no issues with some McBurnie Daytona kits.
Why are those of us who don't like replicas called "haters"? Somehow if you don't like counterfeit money or paintings that's OK, but if you don't like fake Ferraris or Porsches you're some kind of stick in the mud. (And a fake Cobra is a fake Cobra, not as good as a genuine Miata.)
Don't call it a Cobra because it isn't. Call it a Kirkham and drive the wheels off from it. It isn't as good as a Miata, it is much, much better. Hater.
+1 There have been some nasty attacks on FC over the years towards people who dare to say how they feel about replicas. And all from Ferrari owners, go figure.
I agree with the quote about replica Ferraris, Porsches, Lamborghinis, etc... being counterfit; however, I can't say the same about Cobras. My father drove a c-mod Tojero in the Washington region in the late 1950's. They were Franken cars from day one. His started with a Climax it then had a sbc IIRC and who know where it is now and what is in it. Whether it had Toj's logo on it, AC's or Shelby's it was still basically a mix of different parts and engineering. Same with Devins, Listers, etc... Real Cobras are amazing cars albeit crude. I agree that non csx cobras should not have cobra badges; however, should a continuation car? To put the ERA, Kirkham, etc... cars in the same class as Alpha GTOs and Meeras is a bit harsh.
to be fair, the article is from 2007 when 360's weren't 40k. But those are some terrible cars and funny looking owners!
This is like walking around with a salami in your pants to attract women. Imagina the equal surprise when they try to "get in"... lol. At least they admit they only did it for the looks and the attention it garners. Kai
Any replica caught wearing authentic shields, badges, or other unauthorized trademarks should be crushed, cubed, then given back to their owners with a little red bow.
I agree! Why do those who protest them seek them out? I say, if you're against them why are you looking for them! My guess is......never mind......I'm sure you get my point.
I just feel so suprised and sad that someone would spend £27k on a replica when they could get a great 308 / 328 or even almost a cheaper 360 as a real car.
Oh, TOO FUNNY! The guy with the Z-based GTO goes to Ferrari Owners meets with it? Really? Okay... It's good to have things to aspire to. But, these are just silly. CW
Dam and all these years I have been using a potato. Maybe I should move it to the front of my speedo. Oh well I guess I need to look into this salami approach.
Sweet Countach Neil also has along with his 355. I could actually understand and enjoy a repica of some car that nobody could really own, like a Ferrari P4, a Porsche 962, a Bruce McClaren Can Am car, etc... But why someone would build a replica of a current or recent production car, the wear all the bling is really, really sad.
Honestly, who cares what someone wants to do with their money. I am a law student and can understand the logic behind someone who decides to build a replica, the builder gets to design the car exactly as he sees fit and can develop the car to be as cheap to run as a civic or create a high horsepower ZR1 beating machine. At the end of the day a Ferrari and a Replica Ferrari are both just cars, we can put one on a higher pedestal than the other but lets not lose sight of that fact.
Haters should not visit Jay Leno's garage. He can afford to buy any genuine car he wants yet he still has couple of replicas around. If fact many purist would be apalled a some of his machinery. But he doesn't care.
Obviously you are not reading the post correctly, he addressed the rational for paying near or above Ferrari prices for a replica, not the legal ramifications.
Maybe Ferrari would prefer that Ferrari badges only appeared on Ferraris. I suspect they won't be calling you when you graduate. I read it the same way rifter did.
I do not see how. If Ferrari wants to go after companies that make ferrari replicas than happy hunting, Audi forced pretty much all the Diablo replica companies to go underground 3 years ago. I am not planning to buy a replica but have seen some very nice ones in my life, therefore I can understand the rational behind the purchase.
What I don't understand - is often the original factory car is prettier than the "styled to look like something else" body work put over it. A MR Spyder is not an ugly car, a Fiero will flat out get my attention. A GTO conversion on a Nissan I can understand - but that one is fairly ugly and looks nothing like the original. I've seen better GTO kits out there. The "F40" - laughable!!! That interior....its headlights. Ugh! How could an owner stand next to that "thing" and grin proudly? My 944 looks tons better inside and out!
I love how all of the cars are extremely terrible and they don't look like the real thing, and all of the owners wearing Ferrari clothes makes it even worse. And the "Smile Factor" part is just hilarious. I would rate 0 for the smile factor on every car.
