Engine is out, try to remove the main crank shaft bolt holding the pulley on. The old trusty Igersol Rand 1/2 impact failed me this time. Has not done that ever. So, choices are?

    1. Get a 3/4 inch impact wrench (I've been looking for an excuse to get one)
    2. Jam something against the fly wheel gear teeth and the starter hole?
    3. use a proper tool for the job to hold the crankshaft from turning.

If anybody has a tool they made up for this, please show a picture so I can make one up.

Sometimes they have a lot of Loctite on them. A little heat directly on the bolthead will free it up.
    Okay, so flame me.

Make sure you are using a 36mm IMPACT socket. The impact sockets are much thicker than standards sockets and transfer the shock better. If you are using a regular socket it's probably flexing when you are hitting it with the gun and that's why the nut isn't coming loose.

Did you check the setting on your gun, is it set to the highest number? Have you oiled it lately? How about your compressor, is the psi turned up enough? Things that can get missed. How do I know? Because I've missed them. Never hurts to double check.

I did use a standard Sears 36mm 12-point socket and I know it is softer than the impact one (bad me) but that is all I have. I went through the first socket last year working on the 328.

The compressor put out 120 psi, regulated to 110 psi. It is old and I should toss it to get a new 150psi model from Sears (problem is the flow rate is lower for the new model, progress ha?)

Yes, oil it every time I use it.

Did you try talking dirty to it? :D

That was a challenge for me too, eventually muscled it off (try soaking with PB Blaster overnight)

    Solution:

Talking dirty with a MAPP gas torch, applying a proper $37 impact socket, and 110psi of air, the IR trusty wrench came through.

The hot wrench did the trick huh?

Now did you use the "choice" words before or after you hit it with some fire?
