I shudder when I see it done...seems to be the trick of choice for people who don't really know how to drive but want to impress girls and look like they know how to "go fast". I feel for the poor cars.

Unless I'm mistaken, side-stepping has long been the method employed by car mags to extract herculean 0-60 and 1/4 mile times from test cars. I guess the advent of road car launch control in many price-y cars has made it somewhat obsolete. Always seemed a bit silly to me as we aren't driving dragsters!

    Mind numbing isnt it?

You need only go to the TR section to read of some of the effects of this strange habit, the 308 section with split pressure plates and here with sheered off input shafts.

The model's (TR and 348) get a bum wrap for having weak transaxels or Diff's.... really? I track a stupid powerful 348 with very wide gumball tires and a triple disc clutch that is either in or out and have yet to take the trans apart in the last 4 engines... hummm.

While we're on the subject of stupid shifting habits...

What about slam shifting, or speed shifting as my friends in the Corvette Club refer to it? That's when you "power shift" into the next gear by dumping the clutch and revving the gas in time with a forceful jerk of the shift lever. You can just feel the drive line shuddering with each shift. Scarey.

Ouch - I've heard that called bang shifting.

It's tough to understand why people would abuse their gearboxes when a little more practice/skill on their part would let them achieve shift speeds that were just as quick doing it the right way.

Sometimes I wish there were a Ferrari-Nazi.... "No Ferrari for You... 2 years!!!"

Yes, and also what I used to do when I was 16 years old in high school with my parents car (except with a brake which we called a brake-stand).

I have grown-up a lot since, and certainly will not be putting this to practice on my 348 ;)

It sure is, Dave. You'd have to have a shotgun pointed in my face to get me to try this.

I think it is a myth, otherwise we would be hearing more of these 348's grenading.

Not quite a Myth, the ring nuts do come loose. I am just saying that all too often there is an explination for this problem.

But the factory fix was to design ring nuts that by design are even more likely to come loose.

You gotta love those guys. Its too bad they never did read all those reports we used to send in for field fixes. I am pretty sure the fax machine we sent them to was positioned over a garbage can.

If it wasn't thought of in Maranello it never happened.

Hey Dave, it's 63 degrees here. I'm going home and jumping in the pool. Howzit there?

    One solution from fatbillybob:

"The failure of the clutchshaft ringnut causing the ripping of the splines is the second most common failure in the 348 box. It was first reported to me on 3 348C cars that were raced. In my own case my ringnut was not even staked!!! When I reported that to FNA they just blew me off. I love those guys. Anyway the proper fix is a total diassasembly so that all gears are in matching pairs but you can just replace the gear and shaft and it will work fine. There theoretically could be some gear whine and early wear but guess what I did this on another box and it worked fine with no fanfare ant all. One is not an adequate sample size but it is a working datpoint. And I also don't see why you can just marry the gear to the shaft by welding either and I know I could weld it myself and it will not fail. Personally I would just heat treat it afterwords at home of maybe have a pro do that part. Skip all the locktite crap except on the stakering threads. And I was the person who first started using 271 not the factory recommended 242. My belief is that you don't want it to come off and when you want it to it will be many many miles from now and using a little heat to get it off is just fine. In my case the drop gear teeth had chipped off on some parts of the gear so a total teardown was needed. It would be very important to maybe magnaflux the clutchshaft gear to see if there are any cracks. Cracks = you can't weld the gear to shaft. You can see if there are cracks in the gearbox drop gear unless you take it out."

He was far from first at any of those solutions. They were all SOP a long time ago.

Replacing one gear is the norm.

I have welded the gear to the shaft when the splines were gone. It works great.

65 degrees. Working with the doors open looking at snow capped mountains. Roads are still clean and owners are still flogging the cars in cool, dense air. A very nice December but teens at night say the hot tub is more appropriate here.

Working with the doors open used to be a nice thing.... "Medical" Pot my ass! I smells like a f****ng skunk sprayed right outside the door now. There is enough pot being grown within a 2 block radius to supply all of Colorado and the surrounding states. I'm calling in the EPA to do air quality studies its so bad. Imagine that, an auto shop specializing on Ferrari's and Race cars calling the EPA because it stinks so bad OUTSIDE! When I turn up MIA everyone will know why... I need to get out of this looney town.

You guys must have stolen our summer. Here in SC we barely saw the sky all summer. Chilly 60's all year.

What if you flew out to Maranello to give them the solution in person - would that count :p

I have nothing against anyone using it what so ever BUT... damn that stinks when there are thousands of plants all confined in one area. Nothing like the smell of it being smoked, this smells like a skunk sprayed.

I had a cop stop by yesterday to pick up some parts I ordered for him and he wanted to get out of there quickly as it stunk so bad and he didnt want the squad smelling like skunk all day long. Seems like it might be more profitable to pull the hoists out, cancel the overpriced insurance and go with the flow becoming a farmer of sorts. PotChat... Why am I wasting my time getting greasy and doing is crap, I have a tractor and a plow???

""give them the solution in person - would that count ""

No Chance, its an unwritten rule of the games. Shame, this could be so much better for all if that changed.

Geez, if you engineered super weed like you do Ferrari parts there would be no more gearbox problems, no more problems at all. We'd all be too stoned to care or notice! Move out to SoCal, they all grow indoors so you don't have to smell that crap.

It IS indoors and the doors are closed. Having learned the joys of Perkoset and Vicoden over the last couple of years (I am one that rarely takes aspirin) and now knowing what the color of the sky in my Pink fuzzy world looks like.... I guess there are worse things I could do than learning to sit and watch grass grow for a living. I might even find an application for the few thousand feet of hose on the shelf. It worked for the Laboratory Glass supply business next door, the owner tells me he makes 5 times more profit building bongs than selling measured beakers. WTH have I been thinking?!

If it's done right it shouldn't stink anywhere except inside their warehouse. Just walk around until you pinpoint the offender and ask them to fix it. Same thing happened to me, and the guy was very apologetic about stinkin the neighborhood up, and fixed it that day. Or you could always move to Florida or Texas, they'll probably be the last to "go medical." GL:)

Back OT, thanks for doing awesome stuff for our cars!!
