Went car shopping with my dad yesterday. His lease on his S550 is coming up in Feb. He is was set on just getting another S550. But just wanted to see what else was out there. He's had the previous 7 series the same time he had the s550 and loves the way the Mercedes drives. We went to see the Panamera first and drove the car. First off, the Panamera has got to be the ugliest car I have ever seen. I thought the car would grow on me, but if anything it gets uglier everytime I see it. Really doesn't matter as my dad is getting the car and not me. So we take the Panamera for a test drive and I was very impressed on how the car drove and so was my dad. My dad was sold on the car and had the sales man run some numbers. Car had a sticker of 110k and the lease for 36 months was coming out to about 2k with taxes. Hollly ****! I can get a 911 turbo for that much. My dad said for get it and we left. He decides on the way to stop by the BMW dealership to see the 7 series. So we get there and my dad wants to test drive it. Let me tell you the motor in the 7series is amazing. The car flies and has good power all the way through. The way the car drive was phenomenal! Plus the car is about 10 k cheaper and has more opitions. We had the sales person run some numbers and the lease came out to about 1300 for the same term! My dad is sold on the new 7 and is picking it up this week.

Congrats, post some photos. That is nuts on the Panamera lease. My wife wanted me to get her that car after we drove it, and the Lease Rates are just crazy.

New 7 is head and shoulders above the current A8 and rightly so ,since it's a new car while A8 is already discontinued.
Unless you're talking about the all new A8 just shown in Miami Expo recently but that car is not coming to US for another 10 months.

He would look at the new A8, but you are exactly right. He needs a car pretty quickly.

That's because they know that it will depreciate so much in the first 3 years...

i just ordered a panamera to replace a8l in May and also considered 750 and s550. obviously both very nice cars but wanted something more unique. pricing was about same for all 3 of them. porsche dealers will take about 6% off sticker.

new a8 will be out in november and will be way more $ than my 07.

1st, i think the 7 is the best driving car of the bunch tho i'd prob take a 1yr old S10 w/ the v 10 engine. 2nd, I cant understand why the Porsche is being compared to the 7,S,A8? Even journalists are doing it. To me the rear space is totally different b/w the P and the others. Having spent a good amount of time in rear of the latter 3 cars, the P does not compare when it comes to hip, shoulder, & head room. After all isnt room the reason for buying a large saloon? IMO the comparo s/b vs the M5, Maserati, and e63 amg.

I love the 7 series. Of course the fact that I work at a BMW store probably doesn't effect my opinion at all. :)

I agree. If anything, maye compare the Panamera to the M-B CLS...which both have fairly cramped back seats IMO (6'4" here though).

relevant link: 2010 BMW 760Li, Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG, Porsche Panamera Turbo Comparison

snippet: "...You could describe the BMW 760Li as angelic. If ever there was a divine luxury sedan, this would be it...With a howling V-8, a great chassis, and a fabulous cabin, the S63 AMG is the S-class you don't mess with...The Porsche Panamera Turbo wasn't designed to be pretty. It was designed to be the performance superstar of luxury sedans..."

We had the E66 (facelift of the very ugly one).

I found it a fantastic car, so did my mom (who had one too). My dad however, found it wasn't the best of the 3, and thought the S was better because it was more comfortable (but then he is an idiot:D). I honestly can't really find any issues with comfort in the 7. We had the L, I'm 6'9'' and my dad who is 6'2'' I could easily sit behind him.

I loved the chassis too. I could easily do 100mph+ on small british B roads and could place the car very well. I was disappointed that the gear changes where ridiculously slow though and the fact that the traction control couldn't be fully turned of (required removing of 3 fuses and a bunch of errors coming up on the dashboard, lol).

All in all, I want one again if I could!

I must be getting old, after 17 BMW's I picked the 550 over the new 7. I think a luxury car should be a luxury car, not a sports car. I found the new seven to be not that good at being either. I have sports cars do not want a luxury car trying to pretend to be one.

The audi with the v10 is called the S8,not the S10. (the S6 also has the v10)Not nit picking just wanted to let you know, if that's what you were referring to in the first place.

Cheapskate that I am I pay for depreciated cars with cash.
My "best" luxury sedan is a lightly used LS460. Best engineered car on the planet. Dead reliable. 24 HWY MPG.
    Looking for one now.

Even though I was a BMW guy for almost two decades, I have since discovered the quality of an Audi. I saw several A8s in Italy last month and they are so good looking inside and out. I had much rather have an A8 than a 7 series Bimmer.

Fit & finish of the 7 does not even to compare to the MB S Class.
It's in a different league. Acres of cheap plastic.
And the the look, the image... in europe you don't want to be associated to the kind of guys driving 2-3 yo BMws...

True..and fit & finish of MB S class does not come close to that of new Audi A8.. at least the euro-spec A8 that I saw in Italy a couple of weeks ago...

I've driven a 2004 E65 with more than 150K on the clock and let me just say the car looked great, interior was perfect except some worn out patches on the steering wheel.

The engine was smooth and powerful too.. got to give credit to BMW's engineers.

The interesting thing is my father had the new S class before he got the new 7 series. He was very dissapointed with the S class interior and was impressed with the 7 series. This one of the reasons why he bought the car. Now I do not know anything about the refresh S class. I am sure the interior on the 2011 S class is an improvement.

Your father and I have the exact opposite opinion, I thought the 7 series interior was not anywhere near as nice as the 08 S550, and keep in mind I was had 17 BMW's and have never been a MB fan. Like Janis once said "Oh lord wont you buy me a Mercedes Benz" It is what my plate frame has on it since I once said only the big guy could ever get me to buy another Mercedes (my SL55 was a nightmare). Well to each his own.
