    Summary:
I just bought a 2006 F1 430 with about 9,000 miles. After delivery, I noticed that after driving for a period of about 1/2 hour the car will begin to have trouble shifting from 5th to 6th gear. (it is completely normal during the first 1/2 hour or so). But then, when trying to shift from 5 to 6, the gear change will pause, the red gearbox warning light will come on and it will then return to fifth. Sometimes the yellow 'slow down' light will flash. As the time progresses it will then even lock you into neutral I must pull over and restart the car to get it out of neutral. After lengthy driving I even notice issues between 4th and 5th gears, so it's not just between 5 and 6 (but almost never the lower gears).

The dealer looked at it and said it was a problem with a valve related to the e-diff system. They replaced this valve, tested and said it was fixed. I just picked it up again and after 1/2 hour of driving the problem still exists. The dealer said it's possible I got a bad valve and it may need to be replaced again.

However, I'm slightly skeptical and wonder if this could be another problem. Has anyone seen this before? Any thoughts?

Both the dealer I purchased the car from, plus the dealer who is trying to fix this problem are very kind and working hard to address this. I do trust that they will figure it out... but I wanted to post on here to see if anyone else has had a similar experience and perhaps could generate some ideas?

    Thoughts?

    thanks.

Boy that stinks. At least they are working with you on this problem. Good luck.

That is the type of fault that should leave rather clear information in memory.

Not all dealers are equal and not all are really good at dealing with F1 issues.

If they don't get it handled this time you should try another.

rifledriver: they've hooked up their computer and for some reason, the error codes do not get stored in memory. we'll see...

Well that does happen but the symptoms don't make me want to suspect the Ediff.

We have had 3 430's come through in the last few of months with the F1 acting odd, not shifting, popping out of gear, skipping a gear, taking a long time to engage 1st when at a stop, etc all when after driving a while. no codes but we found the bleed screws on the F1 actuator just a little loose. We bled the actuator, aligned it and (touch wood) the cars seem to be ok.
Dont know if this is your problem but might be worth a look.

Bleeding and centering was one of the things that came to mind as well.

Ferrari very stupidly went to Optimas for a while too. Those just will not supply stable enough voltage for an F1 system. I have seen issues on cars under warranty that I strongly suspected were related to that. Interestingly enough even though Ferrari denies that they quit using those junk batteries.

If we both had a dollar for every problem we scratched our heads on that related to an intermitant voltage issue we could be sitting on a beach some where with a cold one and leave this to all the experts. ;)

thanks for these initial responses. I can mention them to my dealer. i suspect "bleeding and centering" are "non voltage" suggestions and the other one about "optimas" is a battery / voltage suggestion? i'm not a mechanic. :) thanks.

Had similar problem. Cause gearbox potentiometer.
    Part number 248095.
    Part costs approx $950.

    SD3 should read "engagement potentiometer".

    Don't do that.

The last thing they want to hear is you telling them how to fix your car from some crap you read on Ferrari Chat.

If you did that to me I would show you the door.

Ha! Good one. I try to be nice when they do that. I try to act like I am listening. I try not to act like they are totally wasting my time.....Really I do.....

Some times it takes a while to chase these types of issues down...be patient!
