My mechanic told me that a properly treated 328 engine will last until 150K miles before it needs a rebuild.

(I know some of the stories of a poorly-maintained engine lasting far less.)

I realize this might have been answered before. If Yes, please post a thread URL.

A well cared properly treated 328 should last way more than 150K miles, more like 200k+ miles. A friend of mine with an 85 308 has 140K+ miles and it's still running strong and smooth.

If I'm buying, only 50K miles; if I'm selling, it's good for 200K miles ;)

I'd be a little harsher than Mike and say top end = 100K, bottom end = 150K as average lifetimes for guesstimating fair remaining value -- JMO...

    Last --- maybe 150K
Remain "fresh" and tight --- maybe more like 75K

    ;)

FWIW, I've got 90K on my 308, and it is still pretty strong....but, certainly "off" 10-20% from when it was new. And, I'm anticipating a full re-build somewhere between 100K-125K.

Realistically, there isn't a definitive answer. It's like asking how long will I live, how long will my whatever last?

It depends, no one can say for sure!

True, true. JP Sartre once wrote, "We all live forever" --- relative to the idea that when we die, our perception of time stops, so it is "forever" to that individual's own frame of reference :)

That reminds of that old tootsie-pop TV commercial from when I was a kid ---- "How many licks does it take to get the center of a tootsie-pop?" ---- deeeeeep stuff for a 5-year old to contemplate - lol :)

Sorry folks, just thought I should be "all pseudo-philosophical and junk" for my 2000th post !

How many people buy a Ferrari so they can properly treat the motor? While they may service it properly they drive it like they stole it in between. Ferrari motors almost never "Wear out". They are flogged to an early demise.

148K on my 84 QV. Could it use a rebuild? Probably. Does it NEED to be rebuilt? No.

    +1

Head gaskets start to degrade and weep before 150K. Remember, the youngest 328 is 22 years old!

I was hoping you'd chime in on this question. I have driven both my cars conservatively and always had timely maintenance, which is why I am going with the 150K estimation. At my current level of use and with continued maintenance, the car will last the rest of my life. It has 67K miles on it and runs great. Trouble is, I have to sell one of my cars, and the '89 328 is listed in Ferrari ads and FML right now.

BTW, it was Johannes who said 150K.

328s have nikasil coated cylinders,I rebuilt a 328 with 72k because of overheating due to a leaking heater core, the cylinders, crank and bearings looked like new,the only wear noticed was very slight in the valve guides,I see no reason why it wont easily reach 200k,the parts fit together with precision better than anything I have ever seen and I have rebuilt just about every type of engine you can imagine over the past thirty years

Just out of curiosity, how much would it cost to have one rebuilt? I know it can vary, but what range would it be in?
