Well, this may be a good time as prices for 1965 and 1966 GT350 are way down from 1-2 years ago. But they will not go to $8K.

Ive got you beat, In the 70's gas crisis i passed on an original cherry black 427 Cobra, Asking $4700. When i was looking at the car a friend who knew the owner whisperd in my ear, Offer him $4200 and hell grab it.

Ok, if we are getting onto the topic of "what could have been" you must read this story of an original Shelby Cobra Daytona:

Do you mean a Shelby 427 Cobra?

Not the Shelby Mustang, The 427 Cobra, I asked the guy 2 questions, How many miles to the gallon does it get and how many gallons does it hold. At the time when you went in to get gas they would only let you fill your tank so the cars with big tanks got more gas. The guy said it got 6 or 7 miles to the gallon and the tank held 11 gallons. I looked right at the guy and said "This thing will never be worth anything" Not one of my brighter moments. LOL True story.

Well, I believe you. I passed up my share of muscle cars and sports cars that were at bargain prices in '70 and on through '76, '77, but I never got a chance at a Cobra.

My old neighbor bought a 70 Superbird 440/4bbl in 1971 for $900.00 from the local Chrysler dealership. The previous owner bought it new, didn't like it and traded it in. Only had 2100 miles on it..... I guess back then, they couldn't hardly give them away.
My neighbor then sold it around 1987-1988 for 25K with 12,000 miles.
If only we knew what stuff would be worth......

Years ago I worked for Max Muhleman, Shelby-American's PR guy and the former General Manager of All-American Racers. When S-A was closing Shelby called his employees and said, "I have a few cobras left..." Everyone thought he was going to give them one. Then he continued, "...and i'll give you a real good deal." I don't rember the price Max quoted. The employees were offended and no one bought a car.

I bet they're kicking themselves now.

Early summer of '71 I passed on a '67 Shelby GT500 with a 427 (I'm not saying it was one of the factory ones... this guy was a mechanic) and a later that summer a '66 GT350. The '67 GT500 was $2,800 and the '66 GT350 was $1,000. Both were in very good shape, and I had the cash in hand. As I said earlier, there were so many opportunities back then, but these are the two that I most regret passing up. Of course there are far better stories, my dentist was buying used Ferraris for very reasonable prices.
