$500,000 in 1984/5. Quote me. To put that in perspective, 3757 sold in 1978 for (I used to think it was $30,000 but others have insisted it was $70,000) much less. $500,000 in 1984 for 3765 LM was perceived as paying "'tomorrow's price' to get the car today" at the time the transaction occurred. Seems to have been money well spent.
Nick Mason is on record as saying it was GBP35,000 and that the salesman thought he had found a very gullible buyer for an old racer. To put this money into perspective, my UK Boxer sold new in 1974 for GBP16,000. Onno
H.I. bought #3801 in 1976 for 76,000 DM - the money for a brandnew Mercedes Benz 450 SEL 4.5 - and was declared nuts by some of his friend to pay that "silly" money for on ol`bugger car! Ciao! Walter
in the early 1970s, these were all in the 10-15,000.00 range... NM car was shopped for months at 18(we offered 12), some undercoating was sprayed on it, shag rugs glued to quiet it down, and sold for a reported 18ish, sold almost immediately for 24, then thirty, then 40 and then resold to a "guy in England"...only to discover that the car needed a "new body for 20,000.00...a princely sum in the mid '70s... Fast forward to 3-5 years into steve earles "historics" phenom...Stu B's car(now RL's car) I flew to LA with suitcase-full-o-cash at 90, to find DW bought over the phone for 115-sight unseen... A local car-4091-openly being shopped at 175(!!!), 125 in cash buys it... By October 1978, 3705 is offerred at 165-in "as raced" condition-we gagged, said thanks but no thanks, listened to a NART offered at 100K, and said "what is going on?" Fast fwd again to early 1980's-4091-again, now in WSG-RBuxbaum(AMG-US?) 325,000.00- sold IMMEDIATELY at that price to PS(?), still owns it.. REMEBER: a TR sold for300K in 79!..I was offered a LM winner P car at 350 in 79 as well... I remember not willing to fly to Philly for an SP at 28-30K When dollar got to 3.5DM to dollar, the next jump started-in earnest...300ish immediately raised to 5-600K and the asymtote was on...a near vertical rise to a high-in my own eyes-I saw 9.95M in certified funds turned down(!!!) within a week of reported 13.5 sale of 3909...then...November oif 1989-412MI/330P3/4 sold for 10+++, ans, it was over almost as fast as it had started... 2.5 million boughjt a GTO in less than 2-3 years.. Stagnant through early to mid 90's, up to 4-5M by 95...by '98, I was offered "the best one," for 8-10...with in a couple of weeks, JS bought one foe 6.5ish, so thats no good...after dot com bust, things slowed...but... TRs started in..the mythical 10 million ceiling had come into play..until... some TRs BLEW up to mid teens, then GTOs again, surpassed them(this, I do not understand) Moral of story: Do high tides lift ALL boats...??? POP quiz-what COMPETITION Ferrari-12 cylinder car-with TEAM/Concessionaire history-on THE CONTINENT- can you buy for less than 6-8 Million US???(TRCs 500s are pushing high threes!!!)
That explains it. Thanks as always Onno.. 35,000 pounds Sterling against $70,000 USD. I'm sure if I looked the exchange rate would have been roughly 2 dollars to the pound. Best, Dave
335s, Which 4091 transactions were KP selling to Crazy Bob in Piedmont and then his selling onward? Bob told me how he had sold 4091 to someone (Texas?) and with the car on the transporting heading to the new owner he changed his mind. Tracked down the truck and made it bring the car back. He then sold 5909 instead. Never did see 4091 although I was keeping 5909 for him in LA for 2 months. Jeff
Thats too funny, when i was but a boy, working for Terry Hoyle in the mid to late 80's and we had N.M. -- UK 3757 in the shop, he had to tell his insurance agent the car was worth a million pounds, no one believed it. Now a good fake would cost that ! Still i get to tell everyone the First Ferrari i worked on was a 250GTO. its not much of a claim to fame but i'm going with it.
It was around late 1969. I had just started a job at Bond Publishing which at the time published Road & Track. There was this friendly employee there at Road & Track with a mustache and tweed hat named Henry Manney III and I remember soon after i started he roared by me driving some dark race car the color of which I don't remember, all I remember it was smoking oil fumes and I was form Michigan what did I know about foreign cars (back there if you drove a foreign car to work at a US automaker, you might get fired) and he said "Do you want to buy this car for $18,000?) and hey that was all the money in the world back in 1969, and exceeded my annual salary, I thought "why would anyone want to buy a smoking car like that?" Now I look back and think it was a series I GTO. Second story, probably happened about 1972: I am in San Marino, a posh suburb near Pasadina and I visit a doctor who has a 250GTO. He says "I am going to make this the best GTO in the world." When it's done he plans to sell it for $25,000.
Where are the chassis and engine serial numbers located on a 250 GTO? If one was to come upon a parked car that resembled a 250 GTO, is it possible to find any of these numbers without touching the vehicle?
I dont think it will matter... you'll never find one just 'un attended' in a car park... i think they tend to attract a crowd which would mean the owner would possibly not be out of any sort of range!.. so it wouldnt be too long before he returned, besides, just take a pic and post it on this forum and you'll get several hundred people (i should say experts too) tell you who, what, where and when about the car!
You can only spot them with the bonnet open. The chassis number is near the front left suspension, the engine number is near the rear right engine mount.
This list is somewhat based on the "non-Serial No." list I compiled back in early-2011 (third post in this thread). I believe meant 3809 rather than 3801. There's been a few recent changes to this list as of late: L.S. who owns 3451 GT now resides in CH. 3505 GT is now with C.M. in CA. 4675 GT is now with J-P.S. in CH. 4713 GT is now with ? 5095 GT is now with ? 5575 GT is now with R.W. in AZ.
good to see 4219 remains with same owner ....here's article i had about 4219, seems most appropriate to archive it here Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
I was privledged to be the Class Host for the 250 GTO reunion at Pebble Beach last year. One of the responsibilities was to greet each owner, get the name and support contact name and cell phone numbers in case they weren't around for the judging. This is so that we can connect them quickly with the judges, a standard practice at Pebble. That list is a major keepsake of my collection of Pebble Beach experiences. Sorry can't publish it for privacy sake. I was surprised on the names of some of the owners.
Serial number anyone? http://museo.ferrari.com/blog/2012/07/17/two-extraordinary-reasons-for-a-visit-to-the-museo-ferrari-in-maranello/ Image Unavailable, Please Login Gr. Martin
