Hi Torque starters for Daytona

Hello, has anyone had experience with the Hi Torque starters in the older V-12 cars??
The one I have seen is offered by British Performance Parts and can often be seen on ebay.

Time to rebuild or replace my starter and it would be nice if the engine turned over a bit quicker.

They are great but be prepared to be shunned.

They sound so different many just can't get over it.

 

If properly tuned, with a sound engine, the car should start, nearly, immediately.
If not, do the starter AFTER a carbon pile load test of the battery, if those BOTH ck out ok....see properly tuned, and sound engine, above.

 

I installed one of those hi torque starters in an old Jaguar XKE V-12 about 10 years ago, and it worked amazingly well. Everyone said that it would sound strange, but I couldn't tell the difference. All I heard was the engine turning over and kicking off. You crank for what, maybe a couple of seconds? It's not like it changes the sound of the car once it is running. And the hi torque starter turned the engine over a lot more effectively than the old Lucas starter and got it started quicker. So what's the big deal if the starter has a higher pitched whine than the original? IMHO, it is well worth the change. I put one on my former '78 308 GTS, and it worked great there also.

 

They are great! I put one on my Daytona and my Dino! The sound is different but not bad. It all but eliminates any hot start issues. I would not use a factory starter ever again.

 

How accessible is the installation on a Daytona, or is a contortionist required?

Gustafson is British Starters. I get my Jaguar starters from him, and got the 308 starter from him as well. Great guy, terrific to deal with, and stands behind his product 100%.

 

It's not too bad. Goes in from the bottom. Two bolts, a 17 and 19mm if I remember correctly.

At the time my exhaust and headers were off. Don't know if you can slip it out the bottom with the headers on. One of the header bolts definately needs to be removed as it holds on the heat shield.

I would not do it unless you definately needed a new starter.

They are the best! I wouldnt hesitate to use one in any of my cars.

 

Sounds good I will give Gustafson a try. It is a royal pain in the ass to replace the starter. Both manifolds have to come off and my car was sold new to Canada so I have the added pleasure of dealing with slip on joints for the exhaust. This usually requires freeing the entire exhaust system on the right side of the car, a torch and a lot of sweat and swearing is often involved. Needless to say I have been putting it off but hot starts are difficult.
