The Batcave has heat in the "office" area, but not in the "warehouse" area. Unfortunately, the shower is in the warehouse. This morning, I learned what is like to take a shower in a room that is 16 degrees F. Would not recommend it. Even for "character building" purposes.
you don't need any more character Greg. you are welcome to a hot shower and cold beer, I think it is your beer anyway. we just drove up 121 to Jano's (Jennie was rear ended in the Sequoia Monday). No traffic jams, just slow 30-40 mph. no part of 114 or 121 was clear of ice, just majority of parts had worn tire tracks that were dry, but bridges and just random places 100% ice. not snow mixed ice, but ice skating clear ice! very little sign of salt or sand. it was very doable and safe, just add 50% to trip. helped there was very little traffic, I think more people are going to drive tomorrow although the roads won't be any better. funny, but only cars going faster than 40 were pickup trucks (me included in the Tundra) and the only cars in ditches were pickup trucks (not me included).
I just got in from doing the same thing with my newbie 16 year old. We went to a local parking lot ( not South Lake Town Center- afraid of the gangstas randomly shooting ) and tried to get him to attempt a few donuts. Ahhh the memories.
Your northern buddy has to agree with you on this one. The micro-inch of melt water on ice makes for a whole new driving experience. It even resists 4wd.
We were up that hill twice this morning and afternoon. It has cleared up a lot, or has good ruts. We went down Colonial from Park Hill. It was kinda fun. No one had been out on it and it was still completely ice covered. Thank goodness for the Quattro. Could not have done it in the Miata for sure. Saw a Vette on 7th that was flat up against the curb hard. You could tell it had slid up against it....... Did you look across the street on University at the entrance to the zoo? The Iguana on top the entrance building is wearing a Steelers Terrible Towel...........
Jennie reported 114 towards Dallas Medical Plaza got better closer you got. Southlake side streets still iccy, all easily passable, just 20-25 mph. guess which car has an ice button!
I can get out, but 10-15 MPH on I 35 southbound north of Lake Lewisville and folks are still piling into each other.
i drove my viper in this mess and yesterday i didnt unclench until i pulled in my driveway. it was a scary journey.
I was thinking about heading to Granbury but guess I will wait until tomorrow. Heard 377 around Cresson still has pretty big ice patches and 167 to DeCordova littered with Hondas and pickup trucks in ditches. Redneck Nascar...
I travelled on it today. Seemed okay for the most part. But still some ice in areas. Be careful though.
Drove to work today, 23 miles to Irving on the GWB. Pickups passing me right and left, me doing a pretty solid 40mph. What is it about drivers of pickups that makes them think they're invincible? They have less traction than any of us. I have traction contol and anti-locks, and I won't go that fast.
It's all about momentum. On ice it's such a pain in the butt to get moving in the things that we don't want to have to stop. I can barely get out to the freeway; the hill is still sheet ice. Running start will *usually* get it done.
It may be a sacrilege, but I drove the Mondial to work today. I actually drive it to work about every day. I had to dodge a few ice patches and stay clear of the drivers that were apparently late for work. Started fine, but the high idle must be directly related to the outside temperature, because it stayed at about 2500 rpm until it warmed up. Usually, it high idles at about 1900 rpm. DRG
Pickups are the worst of the worst ( OK, except for Vipers ) on ice. Lots of momentum, skinny truck tires, and no weight on the rear axle where the drive is. I plowed parking lots and drive ways for extra bucks in highschool but our pickup was 4WD and we put sand bags in the back for weight/traction. I see pickups flying down the roads and think "morons". They just dont know. They associate off road clearance with ice traction. Two seperate topics.
yes. in my case I had a good feel and confidence on the ice with Tundra. mainly because of aggressive AT tires I have for the mud, 4x4 on, and most importantly 6" of ice and snow in the bed for weight. I would have thrown in 50 lb. bags of deer corn if nature didn't add weight already. Like I said going to Janos and back yesterday. The pickups were going the fastest and everything in the ditch was pickups.
