What EXPENSIVE mechanical parts or areas would I have to worry about acquiring if needed? I read Raymond's Jalpa site and didn't find any difficult problems this cars has. Really no worse than a 308. The cars use chains instead of rubber belts and I understand the Jalpa used Alfa Romeo parts.

most of the small trim and electrical parts come from Bmw, Alfa and Fiat cars of the era.

I had 2 Jalpas, one USA, and one Euro spec. ( Euro car Sold to Joe Frazar, and now for sale by him, several years later)

Rear Wheel bearings are expensive and hard to find, but there are ways around that as there is a Mercedes-Benz one that will work.

All of the engine internals are Lamborghini, but these cars rarely need bottom end work. New head gaskets and stainless valves are the only real issue with the top end, be sure to check the tension on the timing chains at the recommended interval.

Th old head gaskets had a tendency to seep, and the sodium filled valves are a grenade with the pin pulled, in my opinion, as these cars all age. This is a huge issue with the 2v 308's, these old sodium valves.

The rest is just a smile and drive it relationship.

Do not let the car sit and sleep, DRIVE IT !!!

Thx Mike, what mercedes part for the bearings? I guess the carbs are another issue that needs to be addressed. I've never owned or driven a carbed car. A parts exchange section like the 308 should be created as small as the numbers are for the Jalpa.

The earlier Jalpa's used a pair of remotely mounted Benditalia Brake Boosters (one behind each headlamp). These are the same units as used on the Alfa Romeo 1750's of the late-60's. They are prone to leaking, or just not working! I had both of mine rebuilt and still could not get them to function properly so I ended up driving the car for years without vacuum brake assist. :)

The shocks can be rebuilt inexpensively. I sent mine down to a place in California. They open them up and install a Koni insert. They work wonderfully after that!

Some of the Jalpa owners have reported "knocking" sounds coming from the top of the engine at low-RPM's. Usually it's loose timing chains, or the bearings on the lower timing gears are going bad.

carbs are easy, i did a parts list and cross reference thread on here and lambo talk years ago. It may be on L power too, i dont remember. the Benz wheel bear requires some work, but its an alternative to the "locked" SKF bearing number. i can look later, it may be in the cross reference thread.

In looking at the wheel bearings their is also the SKF part number GRW234 – about $90 at most shops. It’s the following size: 83mm od x 45mm id x 44mm wide. The OEM is: 83mm od x 45mm id x 44mm wide. So it's 1mm wider. When I took the hub apart I found 1.3 mm of spacers in the hub, so it was possible to use the other bearing by just removing the spacers. Otherwise one could probably (Italian casting variance taken to caution) remove 1mm from hub casting, without having an issue. The GRW234 bearing is from the 1993 Mazda 929.

    raymondQV-

Thank you, and good catch on my typing! - the original is 44mm wide, while the GRW234 has the additional 1 mm, and is 45mm wide..

On a side note I find it interesting the factory decided to use a 44mm wide bearing - not a standard part by any means - they must have had a few spares on the shelf at the time, or the factory received a good deal on them ..

The original bearings are from a Dino, quite common those days.

Yes- and a few others as well - it was also used in a few sports racer / formula car uprights in the early /mid 70's..
