Sure, the HRT was a crap car, but you still have to beat your teammate. Senna got benched at Silverstone for attitude issues, and later against non-stellar teammates did not shine. Christian Klein was put into the HRT after an almost 2 year absence from F1, and out-qualified and out-raced Bruno by over a second a lap... that was probably the most damning indictment of Senna.

Meanwhile, by the second half of the season Hulkenberg had constantly improved to the point where he was challenging his very experienced and still very quick team-mate, Barrichello, and topped it off by that brilliant pole position in Brazil in very tricky conditions. Hulkenberg's pole in Brazil was reminiscent of the early Ayrton Senna in tricky conditions, but nothing Bruno showed was reminiscent of his uncle. Remember, the Toleman was not much of a car either...

I hate to say this, because I really like Koobie, but this is PR-speak.

I had a huge injury to my leg and ankle that was not quite as severe as RK's seems to be, and despite going to the best doctors, I never got back to 100%.

Even in the best possible case, it will likely be a couple of years and numerous surgeries to restore him to most of his original functionality.

He is definitely out of F1 for this year, and probably out for life.

I hope I am wrong, but there is no way he's going to be in F1 this year, and it will be a miracle if he gets enough functionality back to drive in F1 ever again.

    Very sad.

He hasn't outperformed his teamates either at HRT.
Still i agree he would deserve a try in a decent car.

The surgery is over for Robert, it took 7 hours,
and we have to wait a few days to see how the hand reacts and it will need some more surgery.

    from bild.de:
"Kubica hatte von seinem Arbeitgeber Renault erstmals die Erlaubnis zu einem Rallye-Start in einem Auto eines anderen Herstellers bekommen."

"it was the first time, that kubica's employer renault allowed him to start in a rally in a different manufacterer's car."

sorry for my bad english, hope it's understandable. :)

    Damn.

That sucks IMO Kubicle has been the most underrated driver on the grid for several years. Dude is/was ****ing fast.

Can you imagine being ****ed up and stuck in the car for an hour in pain and thinking your career is prolly over?

Nigel Roebuck interviewed him not long ago, and when asked what the best thing about being a F1 driver was and his answer was simply "driving". Not the money, fame or *****, just driving.

For a Pollock the dude gets it. :D

I bet we see hulkenberg in his seat.

I do believe the medical statements. What they don't mention are the nerves and that's ultimately what makes a hand usable.

Given that Nanninis career was over after a clean cut I think Kubicas is definitely over in a F1 car. I'm just hoping for him to have a normal life.

Saw that on Adam Coopers blog. Speedy recovery, Robert!

Heard he had a previous injury requiring screws in his forearm from a road accident in 2003.

i'm reading that he faced an amputation on both hands, particularly the right one but the doctors were able to save them; question will be functionality of the hands, which can take a year...

    Terrible news. :(

This would be even more traumatic for someone not in such excellent physical condition. Sucessful F1 drivers are both physically and mentally elite to be where there are and have great willpower. I hope he fully recovers and returns to F1....

The first shot is horrific. :(
How deep would they have fallen without the Armco?

In some of the other shots/videos it looks like 8-10' down to a sideroad that merges with the road Kubica was on.

In the video posted earlier, in a shot that would be looking over Robert's left shoulder if he had been sitting in the car, there is a clear shot of the basketball sized hole that was torn through the firewall as the armco entered the passenger compartment.

I grabbed a screencap, see below.

    Get well soon, Robert.

I don't think that's Alonso's intention anyway. I think it's good of him to be there even if Kubica doesn't immediately know.

Rubens always does a good job of showing support for other drivers, I don't like him much as a driver but I can respect that for sure.

Alonso is clearly there and visible in the youtube interview posted by the Dr. I am really surprised no one pointed it out as I was sure everyone saw him. Alonso shaved that mess off his face. Anyway, Alonso and Kubica have always been reported as best buddies.
