This is so terrible. I'm still in shock. He is one of my favorites. I wish him the best recovery. It is good that his friend went to see him.

Over the years I've heard the F1 commentators mentioning Kubica & Alonso were friends off track in numerous occasions. It's good of him to go see his friend, whether Kubica is conscious or not. Alonso is likely the link for the rumors of him being a future Ferrari driver that Renault were quick to call foul and untrue in the press.

Another article I've just read said that his hand is "warm" which is a good sign that the blood vessel repairs are good...showing blood circulation in the repaired hand. A 5-7 day assessment is needed to see if they need to go back in for further repairs.

I don't think there is any question that he is out for the year. Let's hope that he is not out for good. He is one of the great drivers, he has certainly proved his worth in F1. Best wishes for his recovery.

As much as I would like to see Kimi back, the press conflict between Kimi and Renault earlier probably killed that possibility. I don't think how fast a driver will be enough to fill the lead driver role. Besides being fast, ability to provide feedback to the team and help direct the development to be competitive is also critical...being able to set up the car for the track and conditions, and many other variables. None of the reserves seems to be complete enough, yet. Experience counts a lot now in F1 with such limited testing, puts new drivers at a disadvantage. Simulators are just not real world no matter how good it is. This is why Rubens have a ride still. This is why often teams makes tire decisions after monitor performances of other cars on track before making final tire decisions.

F1 is harsh, let's hope Bruno gets a good shot at it to get out from having to carry the Senna name all of his life already. While this is a great opportunity for him, it is probably not the ideal scenario. I guess we will see it unfold soon enough.

Bruno's real name is Bruno Senna Lalli - his mother's name was Senna, she was Ayrton's sister; Bruno's father's surname was Lalli. Bruno specifically chose to use Senna as his surname for racing, figuring the recognition was worth more than the pressure it would bring.

 

When they put Klien in the HRT (and Klien isn't the fastests around) he beat Senna by a full second. In GP2, Senna was never 'up there' completely, in a very average field that year.

Lotus Renault GP has issued another update regarding the condition of its star driver, Robert Kubica, who was badly injured in a crash while competing on the Ronda de Andora Rally in Italy on Sunday.

The major concern for doctors were severe cuts to the driver's forearm, thought to have been caused when guardrail penetrated the cockpit, which they believed could have an impact on the mobility of his right hand but, after a long time in surgery, they claim to be 'reasonably satisfied' with the way the operation went. Kubica's condition remains stable but serious, however, and he was placed into an induced coma overnight, from which he is likely to be woken in the morning.

“It has been a very important and difficult operation," Professor Mario Igor Rossello, Director for the Regional Centre of Hand Surgery at San Paolo Hospital in Savona, commented, "Robert's right forearm was cut in two places, with significant lesions to the bones and the tendons. We did our best to rebuild the functions of the forearm, [but] it took seven doctors, split into two teams, and a total of seven hours to complete the operation.

This is horrible.

I really hope Kubica can race in F1 again, but it sounds as though the extent of his injuries may finish his career in top-flight motorsport. Hopefully he can get some normality to life again and perhaps he can enjoy competing in other series - after all the guy loves to drive.

Well I was hoping for better news this morning.

I fear his F1 career maybe over.

I'am sure it will raise some serious questions on the nature of drivers external activities amongst the teams now.

 

I hope they dont go too far in restricting activities. These guys need to live. You could hurt yourself just training(sports etc) as part of a physical fitness routine. The world is not entirely safe. Risk is life. No risk, no life.

 

Yes, there will be no one more upset about it than Robert, of that am sure.

 

Never been a fan of Kubica but it is hard to hear about sonmeone getting so gravely injured from what amounts to a fun diversion from their "real" job. Hopefully he can recover and get back in the car again, but even not if he can just be able to live a normal life with four functioning limbs that in itself might be considered the best outcome.

I hope the best for him.

This really puts Renault back on their heels. At best he is done until mid-year, but my gut says that is a career for poor Robert. Petrov is decent but Kubica was obviously the talent on that team. Maybe Kimi comes back?

"Renault’s Robert Kubica was able to talk to relatives and move the fingers in his injured right hand on Monday morning, after being briefly awoken by doctors at Italy’s Santa Corona Hospital (Pietra Ligure).

Kubica was placed into an artificially-induced coma on Sunday after undergoing seven hours of surgery to reconstruct his right forearm, following a high-speed crash whilst competing in the Ronde di Andora Rally.

The Polish driver spent the night under constant observation and on Monday Professor Mario Igor Rossello, Director for the Regional Centre of Hand Surgery at San Paolo Hospital in Savona, encouragingly reported that there is no swelling or infection on the right forearm, though it will be several days before it is known if the operation has been 100 percent successful.

In order to avoid further physical stress, Kubica will be put under gentle medication in order to sleep for the next 24 hours at least. In the meantime doctors will decide how to treat his elbow and shoulder fractures. Kubica may have to undergo surgery once again for this, but not for a few days."

 

I'm glad to see that Italian medicine has come a long way since the days of Ronnie Peterson.

 

I am very thankful he has good circulation in his had. From that, we can definitely conjecture a good recovery albeit a lengthy one. The elbow and arm are no problem when compared. Give him a year, I don't think we have seen the last of Robert Kubica........

 

Docs says 12 months and Boullier says "he is definitely out for a couple of months. The recovery will be quicker than one year". I wonder what he knows or is he just speculating.

Hopefully Kubica's injuries heal for him to first have a normal life, then if he makes an F1 return great.

This brings back memories of Naninni's severed arm. While the forearm was reattached his F1 career ended.

 

It's going to be heavily reliant on how much muscle tissue is remaining post loss. Much of the time, forearm and leg injuries of this nature require all sorts of muscle tissue to be removed which further means the strength will never be the same, which in turn means no more F1 as F1 is certainly difficult enough for an incredibly fit person already.

 

I hope and pray you are right. He's a fighter for sure and we all know his number 1 goal will be to recover to peak form.

 

All modern medicine has come a long way since that fateful day.
