I am hoping one of the seasoned techs out there could shed some light on one of the few problems i have had with my 91 348ts. When starting from cold there is a loud high pitched squeal. When it first started i would hear it for just a few seconds then it would go away. Now it won't go away until i push the clutch pedal then it stops immediately and there is no more noise until the car sits overnight. I need to pull the cover off and have a look, maybe someone that has had this problem could tell me what to look for. thanks
Very normal. Has Nothing to do with the TB. You just said it makes no difference when clutch is pressed. I forgot what the exact name is, but it has to do with accelerating the warm-up of your engine. When I heard mine, I thought it was the TB also.
Respectfully, I disagree. A squealing sound is not normal under any circumstances I've seen with my 348. (ice cold winters, broiling hot summers for 7+ years)
What happens if you cold start the engine with the clutch pedal already pushed in? Still have the noise? It might be worth your while to check the tension on the alternator and A/C belts, it's quite possible for the alt belt to loosen up if the tensioner isn't properly tightened.
Agreed!!! Let me better phrase what I meant. It could be the Air Injection Device. These tend to make certain wining (as air passes through) type sound that may be mistaken for a TB. Do a search on air injection, see if your symptoms are similar.
Thanks for the replies. I haven't starting with the clutch in, my habit is always to have it neutral. It is more of a high pitched sound similar to a highly amplified cricket that changes slightly if i rev the engine. It is coming from the clutch area. All i have to do is put a very slight pressure on the clutch pedal and the sound is gone until the next day. I will investigate when weather improves.
things will most probably get worse to the the point where this high pitched sound will be present no matter when... wether in neutral or in gear under load...(still, sound will be gone whenever you slightly press the pedal) same thing happened to a friend of mine`348 recently...unfortunately on a mountain trip - meant flat bed to the shop... throwout bearing was the culprit
Hi, I had the *exact* same problems and symptoms and it was the throw out bearing. The good news is Hill engineering makes a great replacement that should last you a long long time. The bad news is that it isn't cheap
