348 O2 sensor removal

+1000....this forum rocks...when I first got my Ferrari I didn't think there was anything I would ever repair myself, with the logic sort of like "holy cow, it's a Ferrari, it has to go to a certified Ferrari Tech for everything", yet thanks to this forum I have done a lot of repairs/improvements myself. I owned a Mustang for 8 years and a Nissan 300ZX for 3 years, and not once did I take a wrench to either of those (I have zero mechanic background), yet after only 10 months of owning the Ferrari I have learned so much thanks to guys here on FChat...and I am keen on learning a lot more as well.

 

In my opinion, to get the full Ferrari experience you need to:
1. Own your own Ferrari
2. Daily drive your own Ferrari for at least a year
3. Track a Ferrari
4. Maintain your Ferrari
5. Concours

#5 really isn't me at this stage of life, but I've been enjoying the other 4 stages.

 

I agree with you, except I am 2 hours away from a track, and God knows how far from a Concours....but the other 3 I certainly am doing!

 

Okay daggonit!!!

So I have been battling a CEL code 1212 "multiplicative value for self adaptation for lambda regulation" for a while now. I THOUGHT it was because of a bad O2 sensor, because I had already put in a new temp sensor, new crank sensors, new icm's, and even new plugs. So.........as you guy know I looked and found a replacement O2 sensor that was SUPPOSED to be the update version of the ones we have in our car.

The the last three digits of the stock O2's was 103, and the superseded O2's is 222.

Well, I don't think it is the correct O2 sensor for our car. Why? Because I STILL got that damn CEL and ONLY on the bank I had the superseded sensor on. I was beating my head around just about everything I could think of would cause the problem to no avail. I thought that no way could it have been the NEW O2 sensors that was causing the problem. So I never looked into it again.

This damn code has been pissing me off for over a year now. The car would warm up just fine, and even drive fine with the superseded B O S C H O2 sensor plugged in. But about 20-40 minutes into driving the daggon CEL would come on. It would especially do it if I was on the freeway holding a low gear for a while. Like when you are just waiting for a hole to get around a car that is driving like a snail. Anyhow, it would be the same code on the same bank, over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over no matter how many things I changed.

Well today I finally decided to relook at the O2 sensors. So I swapped the original O2 sensor that I still had on the 5/8 bank, over to the 1/4 bank (the bank that was giving me all the grief). But instead of putting the 222 sensor on the 5/8 bank I dug up my OLD 103 sensor and plugged that one in on the bank that was not giving me trouble. PRESTO!!! the 1212 CEL went away!

I drove the car for half the day, around town, on the freeway, cruising, driving it hard, holding a low gear, grandpa-ing it, driving normal, and no CEL. Where as before it would come on in less than 45 minutes.

So ........... it may no be that the "superseded" 222 sensor is compatible with our ecu's. At least no mine anyway. I guess now the hunt is for the 103 sensors if they still make them.

You guys running the Borg Warners, any issues with those, and do they have the plug-n-play versions?

 

I replaced one of my O2 sensors on the 355 with a 4 wire generic sensor the other day. Did not bother with the splicing because ... I had the tool to remove the pins from the housing, and the new pins from Delphi in my possession so i just crimped on the pins, put them back in the old connector housing and presto. Can you get a generic O2 sensor instead? Maybe your 222 was just defective. Did you look at the voltage level while it was running?

sometimes I think your car is possessed. In the 4 ferraris I have owned I have never had 02 sensor issues that could not be fixed by a swap and I have always ben too cheap to buy the "right" ferrari unit. I have always bought generics. I have even fixed a sensor or two with a propane torch burning off deposits.

 

by the way Ernie. If you want, I will send you the pins and the crimper. I found the pins at the specialty electronics shop and bought a few.

 

Wow Ernie, just wow! If you are looking for non-Bosch O2 sensors that are plug-and-play and work with our ECUs, try the Walker 250-24040 units: http://www.oxygensensors.com/catalog.php?&pkey=1103825 (I've been running these on my car for years without problems/O2 sensor codes.)

 

If that code pops up again, which I don't think it will, but if it does, I'll give those a shot.

What pisses me off is, now I have two Bosch O2 sensors that I can't use. I just can't beleive I was told these were the "superseeeeeeded" version and the things don't work right.

This is REALLY PISSING ME OFF!!!!

So after driving the car for about three weeks now with no problems. No check engine lights, no misfire, running just fine, today that @$%@&*^#$*#&@$*# 1212 code decides to pop up again and on the SAME BANK 1/4!!!!

I should just burns this damn car to the GROUND!

 

I haven't been around to follow all that you have done to your engine, but I'm just curious, have you added a grounding wire from the O2 sensors to the frame or other reliable ground?

You know chubba, that way crap goes with this stupid car I would probably put the gold pins in and STILL get the damn light. I think there may be a problem in the loom some where. I would hate to put the pins in to only find a busted wire half way down the loom.

 

Thanks for mentioning that, I do know about the extra ground, but don't use one. I have had the car over 9 years running it with no the extra ground. Never had the need for them. The O2 sensor on the 1/4 bank use to be on the 5/8 bank, and I never got the 1212 code on that bank running the same sensor.

There is something screwy going on, and I know it's gonna end up being small and stupid.

But what the hell I guess I'll try it at this point. Cause I am really getting pissed with this car.

Update again.

Since putting the old O2 sensor back in it started giving me problems on the 1/4 bank. So I swapped the Sensors from side to side to see if the check engine lights jumped sides. And they did, with a twist. I was no longer getting the code for lamba regulation (O2 sensor) I was now getting all sorts of crazy codes, crank sensor, then coolant temp sensor, then throttle position sensor, but no O2 code. What the hell???????

Well finally 2 days ago I decides to drive the car for about 15 minutes so it got all the codes out that were gonna come out. A few minutes into the drive BINGO cel 5/8. So I keep driving, light goes off, then out again, off then on, then on SOLID, then the bank shuts down, then comes back on, then shuts off and doesn't come back on until I get home. I pull the codes, and it's all the previous codes but THIS TIME it gives me the code for lamba regulation.

Yesterday I took one of my new O2 sensors, the one with the updated part number, and plugged it in to see what would happen. Fire the car up and let it go through the relearn sequence. Take the car out on a 20+ mile drive, and it runs without a hitch. Then today I take it out for a 60+ mile drive with no check engine lights.

So the updated O2 sensors seem to be okay.

What has me puzzled is, why if the O2 sensor is what was causing the problem the Motronic was giving me all the other codes and NOT the code for the O2 sensors until I pushed the car to it's limit???? Whatever. I guess I should just be happy the stupid car is running right again, and just shut up and drive it.

 

Ernie, what is the part # for the new O2 sensor that you speak of that solved the problem?

Also, did you get your rad leak fixed?

 

The updated part number is the same one I posted at the beginning of the thread, 0 258 003 222.

As for my radiator, nope haven't fixed it yet. I've just been topping it up and driving the car. I'm gonna wait to fix the radiators when I do the engine out major, which is way over due.

I just tried using the 22mm O2 sensor socket but the little nut attaching to the exhaust bolt is in the way and not giving enough room for the socket to slide in to sit on the O2 nut... is this the reason why you guys used the open wrench instead of the O2 socket?

I have a 7/8 open wrench but it doesn't feel as tight on the nut as should be. I just didn't want to strip that #$% O2 sensor nut!

 

Make sure you are only turning on the "nut" attached to the sensor. You may even need to spray some penetrating oil on it first.

 

Stumbled into this thread, since I just replaced both O2 sensors on mine. As another data point, I did not have to undo the the intake manifold or remove the wheels. Just used a a $7 O2 sensor socket from Harbor Freight, ratchet wrench with extension, and U-joint. Able to reach under the manifold to unclip the plugs, too. Took about 10 minutes for both, including the 1 minute to slather DeOxit on the terminals.
