I came across this watch for sale: http://sfbay.craigslist.org/eby/jwl/2195439092.html There is a picture of the back of the watch, and there is some cylindrical gizmo with a warning label that says, "Only open this in case of an actual emergency!" So what exactly is this? Does the cylinder contain compressed gas that can blast you off the ground and out of harms way? Does it release green dye (like the dye packs I had to wear while on an aircraft carrier flight deck)? You could probably have me going with just about anything at this point...
Last I heard there have been 20+ confirmed rescues because of this watch. (that was several years ago so I am sure there are many more now) I own one and thankfully have never had to use it. Cool conversation piece though!
I have always liked the Emergency..... The real novelty was having one here in the US when they first came out, before they were approved. Some guys were paying >20K for them!
Got one long time ago. It came with a part of the Breitling Orbiter canopy. please see enclosed pics. This works only at the 121.5 mHz frequency which is the emergency frequency used by planes. If your are really serious about having a emergency beacon, you can get a 402 mHz EPIRB ( emergency position indicating radio beacon ) that sends your signal to satellites that orbit the earth. Newer ones even will send your Lat/Long obtained by GPS narrowing down your position to within 1/4 square mile. EPIRBs have gotten real small. P.S. Sorry for jacking your thread. WOW!! That is an amazing piece you have. Thanks for posting pics. Were you involved in the balloon project?
It was a limited edition of 1999 pieces. (for the year the Orbiter balloon) each one came with a piece of the actual balloon.
sign an agreement stating that they will bear the full costs of an accidental activation of the system.
That's why he said "used to" which is correct you used to have to have a pilots license. (I am a dealer) Later they were approved for civilian use so anybody with a drivers license could get one. Sadly they just stopped making them altogether.
Here's one I sold about 8 years ago. 18kt white gold limited to 10 pieces. Image Unavailable, Please Login
They are no longer sold new??? They are on the Breitling website. http://www.breitling.com/en/index.php#/models/professional/emergency/ I kinda like this version (no digital displays): http://www.poweredbymario.com/breitling/breitling_emergency_mission_003.jpg
Even though they are still on the website they have stopped making them. (I'm surprised they haven't updated their website yet) The other one without the digital displays is called the Emergency Mission and they stopped making that one a few years ago.
I have the same one with the blue face and stainless steel ( Mission Emergency) I bought at Toruneau in New York on 12-31-2008. Almost every time I wear it someone asks about it. Funny, even when flying commercially, I always wear it, you just never know.
Do the xray TSA people stop you to check it out since it may look like there are a lot of gadgets packed in it? I wouldn't want to tell them "NO DON'T TURN THAT KNOB!" when they go for closer inspection, lol!
No I was not. Just was lucky enough to run across the watch. However, I did follow their progress. Ed
