I wondered if you can use an oil filler cap as a substitute, the central dip stick just unscrews it has a unclubbed seal and is the same size and thread.

But doesnt get you any further if you dont have a spare one of those lying around!

    Yes!

A few weeks ago I made exactly the same stupid mistake. Left my aluminum gas cap with the Ferrari-logo on it at the gas station. I only found out a week later it missed. Fortunately no accident happened.
Called the gas station, went by, but nobody had turned it in. Of course not, I thought. It makes a nice (and expensive) souvenir.
I went to my Ferrari-independent and he told me it was an expensive cap: 500 euro's. He told me however that the aluminum cap wasn't original for my 348. He gave me an original one: the black plastic cap!

Last week, I filled up the gas tank of my family car. Behind the counter was an 18-year old cashier. He looked at me and asked: aren't you the guy that drives the red Ferrari? He handed me my aluminum gas cap. Told him I could kiss him, but gave a finders fee instead.

There are still honest people around!!

Heck, for that price I was going to order one for a spare. The site says the part is out of stock and expected 4-1-11.....April Fool's day. The 348 and the early tr use the same cap, black made out of heavy brass. Were can we find the seal?

Wow, this has me thinking about mine now, I have an '94 spider that has the shiny cap and the car (I thought) is all original. The fuel cap matches the oil fill cap.

Mine is a '94 and also has the shiny aluminum cap. I didn't realize these things cost so much to replace.

what I did was purchase the a.m. aluminum cap and the oem black cap.. Once I received he aluminum cap I removed to ring type seal and I grinded down center nipple looking thing in the center of the cap and make is flush. Took the black seal in the black cap and inserted in the aluminum one. I was done.. In theTestarossa the black rubber seal covers the whole inside of the cap.. will not get sucked in once cap is on.. toss the ring seal the aftermarket cap comes with and your done.

I bought an OEM one at a swap meet last year at FOW for $10.

I guess I did pretty well.

Great story. I will keep checking at the gas station.

Thanks, now I don't feel quite so stupid any more... :) :)

Guess that is why they started putting a connector on the gas caps. Of course, then the seal breaks loose, but they are only $300 to replace, or you glue in the seal for $0.10.

I, too, had no idea about the black cap. I have the silver one.

I ordered the cap from Superperformance in the UK and I ordered a black one from ebay.

    Will post pictures for comparison.

I got a metal cap from Ricambi and the rubber seal failed in <1 year. I'd go aftermarket and save the difference. I may order a black one for my F355 to use daily and only use the metal cap for shows.

Did you inquire about replacing just the rubber seal? Or is that not an option?

Don't think it's an option as the rubber is integrated with the cap. It's glued. But no, I didn't inquire about just the rubber seal.

I'm the original owner of my 92 348tb and it came with the metal cap with the logo on it.

I have the same model and year as yours, I am not the original owner though, but I have the metal cap :)
Thanks for the input, not very many original owners to these cars out there.

IIRK, the one you purchased was an aftermarket one. We purchased them from the same source as Superformance. We stopped selling because of multiple failures of the gaskets, and other non-performance related issues.

They all original from the same source in Europe.

My 91 (Euro) has the silver cap (matches the oil filler one) and it is definitely factory original.

On a F355 with the metal cap, I am able to slide the cap, face down, under the filler neck in the pocket, and still engage the gas nozzle and fill the car.

In this manner, I can still discuss the latest hairdressing techniques and styles with all the pretty girls at the gas station, and not forget the gas cap.

Same here, on both counts... the car came with both, new from the factory.

Thanks. I believe the in service date for my car was 12-21-92. Unless the dealer replaced the cap, it came from the factory with the metal cap.

I sold my used one for $150 a couple of months ago. the dealer sold me a new one for $300 so they gave me a break. I thought the ricambi price for the metal one (355) was $300.
Still expensive but better that $700. My old one had just lost the bonding agent and the rubber seal needed to be re-glued. Of course the dealer didn't tell me this or I would have said keep the old one, I'll fix it.
