Thanks for the info. I found the photos I needed for the Porsche's. Alot of stuff is still out there since many American's went to this race with their camera's full of Kodachrome.

I saw him at the Mt Equinox hill climb last summer. I was a bit surprised at how quick he was up the mountain.

    Stephen,

It's great that you are capturing these moments in time before the people who can tell the stories are gone and they are lost forever.

I can't wait to see the entire piece.

    Bravo!!

Before we move on from Mr. Fitch, I'd also add he is prominately featured in another book I have recently read, "California Screaming..The Glory days of Corvette Road Racing" by Micheal Antonick.

    ISBN 0-933534-31-0

But buy "Racing with Mercedes" first...it seems John has had a run in with the EPA at his house....support an American hero.

I believe he really started to make the front pages when he drove for Briggs Cunnungham at LeMans and around the US in the early 1950s in the Cunningham built cars. Possibly his greatest achievement was in the 1955 Mille Miglia where he drove a special factory prepared 300SL to the overall first in GT. This was part of the official MB team with Alfred Naubauer[?] in charge and Moss winning the whole thing with Jenks. Weeks of practice were held prior to the race but this is a memorable achievement for any driver particularly for an American. just one man's opinion tongascrew

...as wells as taking a squad of early Corvettes to Sebring and whipping them into race cars in a month's time......that was in the book I cited a few posts back.....great story.

I had a wonderful time with John Fitch interviewing him at his home. His enthusiasm is contagious and his anecdotes about the Carrera, Le Mans, the Miglia Mille and his contemporaries were captivating. What a great individual!

It does appear the State assistance for remediation ended some time ago, and they are holding him resposible for not knowing the tank was leaking.

UST installations today are pretty complicated and leak detection is part of that.

He needs to pursue the contractor that mishandled the removal, IMO
