The 1959 movie is "On the Beach" starring Gregory Peck, Fred Astair, and Ave Gardner. It's about what happens to the rest of the world after the US and USSR have a nuclear exchange, with radiation fall-out descending on areas not directly hit. Anyway...Fred Astair buys an old race car (Ferrari) and proceeds to race it and drive it...it's white in collor and I really can't tell what model Ferrari it is. But I thought it was interesting. I see other threads where people try to name all the movies that have a Ferrari in them, but I don't recall this movie being mentioned.

i love how fred astair bolts on the plaque just before he starts the engine and blocks the door of the garage. it's good to know ferrari won the last gp in the world and how ironic the last car running in the world is english.

    Astaire.

Great movie. While he had done a number of light dance/musicals before his acting in OTB surprised the heck out of a lot of people.

Ava Gardner is cross with Fred Astaire for driving his Ferrari near to where the cows are grazing. She says "the cows won't give milk for a week" due to the awful noise he has created. Well duh, the cows are grazing on highly radioactive grass, and she only drinks brandy anyway. She's all testy just because everyone is about to die.

I noticed that the plaque screwed onto the nose of the Ferrari declares that it was the winner of the 1964 Australian Grand Prix, so I guess the movie took place slightly in the future at the time it was made.

Yes, but I wouldn't have done those stunts. It seems not just the cars were expendable. :)

Certainly not just in that film. In those days there was a romantic fatalism attached to motor racing that seems inconceivable today.
