1174 appears for sale in Germany near Koblenz: ...and the exodus east across the Atlantic continues: this is the excellent car that Ivan sold some years ago to S.B. on the pacific coast and which Autosport Designs was offering a few weeks ago...one more loss for American Maseratisti...and no guessing which side of the water Ivan will sell the other 5 speed currently available in the US: 1028....US fence sitters it is time to jump! I have zero connection with either car. http://suchen.mobile.de/fahrzeuge/showDetails.html?lang=en&id=142130895&pageNumber=1&scopeId=C&sortOption.sortBy=price.consumerGrossEuro&sortOption.sortOrder=ASCENDING&makeModelVariant1.makeId=16600&makeModelVariant1.modelDescription=khamsin&makeModelVariant1.searchInFreetext=false&makeModelVariant2.searchInFreetext=false&makeModelVariant3.searchInFreetext=false&vehicleCategory=Car&segment=Car&siteId=GERMANY&negativeFeatures=EXPORT&damageUnrepaired=NO_DAMAGE_UNREPAIRED&export=NO_EXPORT&customerIdsAsString=&tabNumber=1 best regards, Marc
The car is a manual, has Euro bumpers, Euro steering wheel, but the ungainly US side markers ... and the asking price has doubled within 3 months: from USD59,5 to USD109,6k (EUR80k) at today's exchange rate! Cheers, P
Welcome P.S.! Yes certainly a strong asking price but not unheard of, hopefully they will consider offers. While some consider doing paintwork wrong unless there is actual damage and to each his own choices I had no qualms in doing the bumpers AND sidelight conversion on my baby: 1992 and 2005 photos. I call those sidelights Ralf Nader pimples and certainly it made a big difference to get rid of them. It was very satisfying to tell a former Maserati dealer who used to sell them new and said it could not possibly be a US car that yes it was. best regards, Marc Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Marc, The virulent revulsion to the bumpers I certainly understand. There were few if any uglier "safety" bumper implementations than the those on the Khamsin. Maybe the Espada's can rival? But I honestly don't get all the fuss about the side marker lamps? Same on the Merak/Bora and Espada. Maybe it's because the on the Khamsin and Espada the bumpers are just so shocking that you don't notice something so small? Bob S.
Morning Bob: Well it is a question of what one is used to see. If you have grown up seeing one kind of thing, of behaviour of weather of architecture that is what you know and it does not bother you. In the US you have always seen these big sidelights whereas in Europe we are used to the small ones: it is like the bumpers...I remember staring at a VW Golf with US bumpers in Sweden 30 years ago, that tells you it was shocking to my eyes. Conversely one US Khamsin owner only bought one at home after seeing a Euro Khamsin one evening in the streets of London. He then converted it. Also there is the feeling that like the bumpers theses sidelights were imposed on Maserati so it feels good to bring it back to the intended configuration. Just my 2 centimes. best regards, Marc
Hi Greame, As far as my knowledge goes AGIP Sint 2000 (recommended by Maserati for 3500's and V8's) is stlll available in this part of the world altough distribution locations are scarce and if there is one there generally is no stock. So not much help. For some time now I am using Castrol Sport 10W60 in my V8's to full satisfaction. Oil pressure stays higher after a long drive and climbing the Swiss mountain passes. Also I do not even carry a spare liter in the trunk anymore since I do not see ay consumption between oil changes. In my gearbox and diff I use Castrol 80W90, also very satisfactory. Both the Khamsin and the Ghibli used to give a bit of a spline rattle at idling rpm when the box is really hot, say after a more than 2 hour "performance" drive. With the change to Castrol 80W90 this noise has been considerably reduced. Both the Castrol oils have been recommended to me by a friend who does the maintenance work on a few hundred(!) classic Maserat's and Ferrari's and I am happy I followed his advise. Just a note of warning: I did use a full syntetic heavy duty oil: Castrol SAF XJ in my gearbox for a short while, it made the box dead quiet! However, fortunately I was warned by a friend that this oil will eat the synchromesh rings over time! So out and changed for the 80W90!, Rgds, Bart
Hi Bart thanks for that. I have freind who is a lubricant engineer with an oil company. He has sugested similar to what you are using. The Gearbox oil Im using is castrol Syntrax you me thinking about syncros. I find the box quiet but I am not 100% with the change. I had the box Overhauled by ZF during the rebuild which was fantastic as they Changed all the syncor blockers and the bearings. Graeme
Thanks veloce two: oro kelso/senape, very very rare. I think there is another one in those colors in the western US but not certain. On mobile.de there is an identical US market car for sale in Germany but automatic. It took years to figure out what Kelso was until Ferrari historian Keith Bluemel told me it was the color of the livery of Kelso...a famous race horse. senape means mustard. I have sometimes seen it written as Xelso but that is a typo: http://horseracing.about.com/od/famoushorses/a/aa070598.htm There was a 365GTC/4 in the exact same colors and I once had them parked side by side: a unique line up! best regards, Marc
Well let's not forget that a lot of countries required differing equipment especially for lighting. It's all about the bumpers and others did a MUCH better job of that than Maserati did. Ferrari or Detomaso for example. Not that many years later it was possible to have bumpers that looked correct and also met the impact standards. I know the European ones for my Bora (which I have) are an absolute disaster if they get really used. I'm guessing that Gandini had nuthin' to do with the Khamsin rubber bumpers.
This one is for sale in Sweden. http://www.blocket.se/sodermanland/Maserati_Coupe_Khamsin_OBS__inkommande_32265146.htm?ca=15&w=3
Hi Bob: You are right: on Khamsins (and Boras too) the US bumpers are awful and the Euro ones delicate decoration of no use in anything other than "Parisian contact parking" which is why a Corsican who used to own AM120US1082 in Paris when it still had the big bumpers loved them Yes Gandini had nothing to do with the US bumpers, he never ever saw them until a few years ago in L.A. It ruined his day! I have a theory that AM120006 which the factory has zero records on, a car no one knows anything about, which may or may not have existed may have been used in a rear crash test due to the glass...but that is just pure speculation on my part. Eric: thanks for the information: that is Ulf's car he posted here last year, very interesting comments too, sorry to see him sell it. Saw it at the Intl meeting in Bastad Sweden in September: AM120076 finished March 12 74, sold new in Bologna ,metallic blue it is now in a non factory color petroleum blue. best regards, Marc
Hi I think my 5 speed is similar. Who at ZF did you deal with to get them to do it. I am still chasing around to get this storted. thanks
Hi William and Greame, Good to learn you had a good experience at ZF! I had my Ghibli box done at ZF Friedrichshafen: final price was twice the estimate but all new sycros, bearings and stuff. As a bonus the spline rattling at iddling RPM (no power through the box) when the box is real warm; after more than 2 hours real driving! Advise: when you go there be specific about details and cost. Success, Bart
Does anyone have a current colour code for Italver 3214 - I will be repainting my Bora this year back to it's original colour - Oro Kelso (previous owner had it resprayed Red) . The Maserati factory paint chips [Bora-Merak-USA - Eurolac Glidden Salchi] I have don't have a colour swatch for that colour. The Glasurit website lists Oro Kelso Met but doesn't give a Colour Code (www.glasurit.com and click on Classic Car Colors - good website). And I can't find anything on Italver-Pittsburgh web enquiries. I bought this Bora in 1982 from the original owner in Toronto, Ontario. Love the car - understated and powerful without fuss. Bora AM 117/49 US 678 4900 built Sept. '74, USA Spec'n Aldo Lorenzetti, Thornhill, ONT Oro Kelso Metallizzato Italver 3214 Pelle Bianca (Parchment) Connelly PAC 1544 Regards, Colin
Not sure this helps but the full number is 2.443.214 or 2.443.214 it Ferrari used the paint on 365s from 1969 through 1973, sort of a metallic bronze/brown. They called it Gold Poly instead of Oro Kelso http://www.eurospares.co.uk/userImages/ebayShop/PaintCode.htm Not sure this helps, but maybe a lead.
Yes this is a very helpfull site. If you search Oro Kelso Met as a Ferrari color you will have a color code and a paint formula (but is this the same Maserati color??). Philippe S2 7987 www.lamborghinimiura.com
-Colin: Thank you for that very useful link. Yes all the factory list mentions is 3214: http://www.maseratikhamsinregistry.com/specs_1.html So what you and Ron provide is already much more helpful. -Philippe: as mentioned when I parked my Khamsin and 365GTC/4 #15337 outdoors next to each other, surely a near unique event, I saw that it was obviously the same exact color. I have a factory Khamsin paint sample booklet (photos of which I posted here long ago but can repost if desired) but it does not have oro Kelso in it, frustratingly. -Colin: one other thing if I may: in the current issue of VCM in the article on parts guru Kyle Fleming you are seen loading a Khamsin engine "and complete bare bodyshell" in a truck. I am obviously very curious as to the chassis number past history and getting in touch with the owner. Will be glad to provide what I might have on the car and to be of (free) assistance (for sourcing parts and information) in the restoration best regards, Marc
Hi Bart I had the box done here in Sydney, Blacktown actually . At the time 1997 rings a bell. all the classic ZF parts were being built in East Germany and the parts were all available. I asked them to strip the box and give me a report. They called and I went to inspect what they had found. The syncors were all good except the blockers they had partly fallen to pieces. The first gear had a very minor brouse on the outer portion of one tooth. Now evidence of sterss or cracking. I left it as it was $1,400AUD at the time and it wasn't worth changing. New blockers and all new bearingas and the missing data was replaced. cost $1,500.00 Delivered! The local Bus company 2 blocks away had a deal with ZF for service. Easy. Be honest it was the easiest part of the restore. Graeme
How different is the color from this car? http://www.motorcargallery.com/car_06.html You certainly remember this one from "back in the day" eh? Bob S.
Very under rated car, always wanted one, but enjoy the Grifo too much. I love the design especially that offset vent on the hood you have to feel confident to design that.
