To a previous post,no,the houses at the bottom of the cliff have always been there! The major problem now, besides the ongoing recovery of bodies is the serious lack of drinking water. There is a constant stream of trucks trying to keep up with the demand and Fonterra, the dairy company shipped a trainload of water in too. 80% of the city has no water supply and the sewage infastructure is severely damaged also. There is major concern that disease could become a major problem because of this.About 30% of the city has no power and some will have none for at least a week. The Government here today signed off papers to allow above ground power lines to be constructed to replace the severely damaged underground ones which are going to take a lot of time to fix. The liquifaction is unbelievable unless you see it for yourself. The area affected by this is huge, much larger than the big quake last year.It is a major to fix as there are so many unknowns to sort out before you start. The news tonight is that there have been no survivors found today. The official death toll is 97 tonight but there are still 280 unaccounted for and it is now believed that there are 120 bodies in the rubble of the CTV building that has been receiving so much media attention. There is a problem knowing just how many people were in there as CTV was only a small proportion of the numbers. There was also an English language school with a lot of Japanese students attending.I guess it is hard to know just how many of them were actually there at the time of the quake. It is amazing to see the number of aid workers from so many of your countries working for Canterbury,so quickly after the event.
Thoughts and prayers for everyone! With the natural disasters around the globe the governments seem to be quick off the mark these days with expert teams flown on military aircraft in the timeframes needed. It's gratifying to see such people able and willing at short notice to be there and each country help each other out like this without hesitation. It was only a short time ago we received help for floods.. and now our guys can come across help there for example! The past couple of weeks I've been sending emails and files back and forth to NZ client for their project and been suddenly totally silent past few days.. NO idea if caught up or WHAT!.
Just heard on the news some scumbags looted/robbed the place of one of the TV presenters that died in the quake. Also more pics. I think it's important not to over react. I'm sure it was just a simple case of bad selection of words. We've all done it. My brothers actually over here working for Channel7 at the moment and he did comment how when there is a disaaster it's all about the reporters here. Same with the floods in QLD they were all back slapping each other about how much they were doing to help and how many hours they were working. If it wasn't rating they wouldn't be broadcasting.
Just checking up for updates. Death toll still the same but 226 people still missing Graphic of quake. http://media.heraldsun.com.au/multimedia/2011/02/_earthquake_cc_/index.html http://resources.news.com.au/files/2011/02/23/1226010/479603-aus-file-nz-quake-graphic.pdf
Hi again, To the post regarding the looting of the missing persons house. Her son and daughter had kept a well publicised vigil near where the CTV building site where their mum worked. Some lowlifes obviously saw this on the TV coverage, recognised them and looted the house. They stole a lot of her personal possessions including her jewellery. We certainly have our share of "lowlifes" here in NZ too.It is amazing just how a disaster like this is seen as an opportunity for these people isnt it? Just this morning,on a radio channel dedicated to people providing offers of help, info on available services etc, there was news coming through of a dairy in Christchurch selling a litre of milk for $4!!Thankfully his dairy was named so hopefully he has a major surplus of milk left at the end of the day-scumbag!!!

>>>Australians may be among those arrested,<<<< more poor reporting by Reuters, why not wait until the looters have been confirmed and then publish their names ? no names attached to the article , just AAP, they should be bloody ashamed of themselves, especially after their reporting of the QANTAS trouble in Singapore last month or the month before where they "reported" the plane had crashed ****wits !!
sadly the death toll has risen to 113. http://www.news.com.au/world/medical-workers-tell-of-christchurch-earthquake-horror/story-e6frfl00-1226011830962
Front page of the paper had pictures of some of the missing. One of them had been to a couple of FOCNZ AGMs and other club events. Didn't know her well, but still gutted this could have happened. Hoping there's a miracle and they'll find her somewhere safe and well. c
at least they still have a sense on humor [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zcGUg4tNR2M&feature=aso[/ame]
Qantas aren't looking too good atm, charging for all the volunteer coppers that went over to Christchurch from here.
Hi there, The death toll just keeps on rising,up to 142 now with 200plus still unaccounted for.An earlier post talked about the looters, and that they should be named.Well, two of them were caught yesterday stealing the portable generators[3 of them].They got their time in court this morning and were remanded until mid March.another corner dairy was exposed yesterday trying to sell his 1.25litre bottles of Coke for $5.50.A pretty good profit margin over the $1 or less he paid for them. Today it has been reported that about a third of the central business area in central Christchurch will have to bedemolished and rebuilt.People are so traumatised and are leaving the city in droves. In our town, one hour south of Christchurch, there are many support centres where people can stay, and be fed for as long as they require.I believe there are about 500 here. Many have travelled further south also. I guess that once the bodies are all recovered, there are going to be a lot of businesses that will never open again. Many small businesses didnt have income protection in the last quake so this will be the final knockdown for them.It could be months before some of the central city is operational again so the effect is massive on all businesses. The city had worked so hard to restore confidence in the central business district. The normal Boxing day sales were cut short by the large aftershock on the 26th December so they had a 'rerun' a couple of weeks ago which was very successful. Many people we talk to have said that they will never return to the area, but of course, that will change, but over a long period of time. Thanks for the posts of support guys.I will forward messages to our FOC members up there in the quake zone when I can contact them.- Cheers
