F355 F1 -99 with leaking gearbox, need advise

Most F1 leaks I've seen are the pressure lines that run between the pump assembly actuator. Usually it's just one line. If you can access the lines, top the system off and have it run on jacks. The leak will be quickly spotted as it's a high pressure system. (30+ bar)

Or let a competent shop diagnose it.

 

How can it leak enough to cause the transmission to malfunction without leaving a big stain on the garage floor. How can an owner not see this? Sounds like the seller is hiding something.

 

Note M6s don't have these kinds of problems....

 

A Pumpkin" is what we call you if you do not get an expert to find out why the F1 fluid is almost empty and the gear selection is not working. Without an expert actually looking at the car you will only get generalisations of what people think. If you buy the car without the expert opinion you will be a ....Big Pumpkin.

 

OK, time to sidetrack the conversation; something I'm rapidly becoming famous for. I have a '95 F355 6-speed, leaking from trans, appears to be the seal at the rear. Car had 30K service, but quite a few years ago. (1) Is the seal an easy fix? How does one get at it? Or (2) should I just bite the bullet and drop everything and fix belts as well? Belts LOOK good, but who knows?

 

Perhaps a qualified mechanic.

 

I thought a pumpkin was an orange 355!

 

Really depends which seal. If it is at the rear of the trans, in the clutch area it is a very easy in car fix. If it is between the engine and trans that too is an easy in car fix.

My policy on the belts on a 355 is 3 years. 5 would be my maximum so that is between you and your odds maker.
