A few photo's i took today. First couple show an usual view of the bottom end of the engine that has now been built up, notice Ferrari numbed alot of the parts B15 Next is the other side with the pistons now in the sleeves. Pic 4 shows the heads being built up, to the bottom right are Rob's workings out, he measures all the gaps for the valve shims so we can get new ones from Ferrari down to the nearest tenth of a mm, the old shims are the round disc's just above the paper work. Last pic, is just a piece of art. Grant Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
To me always the nicest part, putting the engine back together with nice new parts Grant, why do you order the valve shims from Ferrari? There's 24 of them, what do they charge you per shim???
When i looked at them yesterday with Rob, a few where quite worn, some could be reground and then re-hardened, but i thought what the heck, before i go down that route i will see how much they are from Ferrari. so i gave them a ring and got a big shock when the price came back as £1.40 - £4.50 each depending on the size, although how the price can range so much when there is only 1mm difference in thickness in total, they go from 3.5mm-4.5mm and there are 20 different sizes, within that 1mm range, so i will buy new ones if they have the right sizes.
1/2 tenth of a mm NOW THERE's a measurement description to confuse the masses 0.5mm = 20 though therefore a tenth = 2 thou so 1/2 of that is 1 thou so the measurements are to the nearest thou However 1mm = 40 Thou hence if there are only 20 step increments then the shims are only supplied in 2 thou differences and will need to be bought 'oversize' if the ideal is not available then ground down to be perfect Cheers Peter M
0,05mm (1/20th) = 2 thou. That's plenty good enough. I strongly dislike grinding and re-hardening shims. It's a difficult to measure process, and the chances are that you end up with shims that are either too soft on the surface, or hardened too deep making them brittle. That apart from surfaces being absolutely parallel. If Ferrari can't help you with the right shims, chances are that the Volvo dealer can?
Grant, go to: http://www.international-auto.com/ ask for Jake. Cost: $ 2.15 ea. If you buy the full set of 68 shims, $139.00. Regards, Alberto
I think the shims for the older 2 valve F engines are the same as Fiat twincam Lampredi shims...I even asked my local shop long time ago if they had some suitable shims in their stock, yes, and it turned out those were Zastava shims as they used to be a dealer! I recently bought all new ones after heads overhaul frome superformance uk they were cheaper than at the local Fiat dealer. But it seems mr Grant already has them.
That's correct, Ferrari in the UK have confirmed they have all of the shims i require, for just over £1 each, i still can't believe that price, i was expecting them to say £20 each when i phoned them! Thanks for all the advise guys. Grant
A few pics sent to me today, bumper nudge bar, pop up lights, quarter lights, and of course the engine. Now i am starting to get a little excited. It's been quite a project.....good to see it coming together. I'll have to Log In from the Body Shop, to show them the care taken in the headlight bucket process!!!!
Grant, She is coming nicely! I would be excited too. Can't you do us all a favor (ok, especially me) and roll her outside in the natural light to see how that beautiful color really looks! All the best,
Grant, Your excitement is totally justified! Also, the most attractive shot of a timing-case I've ever seen
Thanks Jack. Rob spent a lot of time thinking about painting the inside of it [ and i guess doing it] he was not looking forward to it, but it looks like he did a great job. Grant

I hate to be the one to break it to you Grant, but if this keeps up you're going to have to get out of the resto blog business and get into the driving your beautifully restored Daytona around and enjoying it business. Hope you're ready. Thanks for a thread that's been a real treat to follow! Best, Dave
Thanks Dave You will have to add journalist to the list as the second article i have written on the restoration should be coming out in the next Ferrari Owners Club magazine. Not bad for a Dyslexic that must try harder, that's what my school report said anyway, all i can say is thank god for spell check!
