What do you collect?

What all do you have in your collection?

Cool! I've always wanted to get more ancient coins. I have 2 from ancient Greece and a few from ancient China.

 

Not sure if I should post photos or not..... What's the nudity reg here in the OT? Surly it is not "full frontal OK!!" like in Rossa...?

Let's see them! I have a few Greek's. An Athen's Tetradrachm a few Ptolemy's and some from Calabria and Sicily pre Roman. My oldest is the Athen's Tet at around 450 BC.

 

I'll have to find them. They're here somewhere.

I keep the older stuff (pre-Civil War) in one box, and newer (post-Civil War) in another. Both boxes are in my closet somewhere.

 

Interesting. I too have a very large, very complete sea shell collection. I keep it randomly scattered on the beaches around the world.

Cool, those are just a bit older than the ones I have. I've got quite a few from the 1800's though

 

I've got mostly modern US coins.

Almost complete sets of:
US proof sets
Silver eagles (both mint 69 or better and proof 69 or better)

Some random silver eagle bullion in small bulk
Some Morgan and Peace dollars (including a couple nice GSA CC Morgans)
And some odds and ends including a really cool Hologram maple leaf proof set that I really like!

I say almost complete sets above because I've kinda dropped the ball the last couple years so am not up to date on the eagles. I also have a few of the very oldest yearly proof sets that I have yet to find and grab.

I've kind of gotten out of coins but I should go see what I need to at least keep the sets up to date.

 

I get your point, but bear with me....its an interesting story.

I started collecting when I was 12 (born and raised in Florida) I watched as Mom & Pop beach shops closed (sold their land) or got bought-out by big corporate chains. Mom & Pop usually had one beautiful coral that they got back in the 1950's or 60's as a show-piece in their shop (that was never for sale to the public). I bought one or two per year working part time as a kid when I first started. I always watched for one of these old shops to put-up the "going out of business" sign.

My idea was to pull them all together in a nice collection (give them a more respectful retirement than working as a display in a T-shirt shop)... and one day give the entire display to a museum or public aquarium (I have already talked to the Florida Aquarium about the idea). The specimens I was able to collect are really amazing examples (without broken pieces). I have 10 more that are even bigger and more spectacular.... but they are too big to display on the fireplace... and I just moved recently, so I haven't displayed them yet.

Many years ago, coral was protected and ban from import... I'm guessing 1980 in the USA? Its been nice to see that new companies have sprung-up to make fake corals from epoxy, to supply the demand from shell shops and the aquarium industry.

 

If you are that good you can make the US Army Marksmanship Unit at Ft Benning, GA.

Shoot all day long AND get paid for it.

Neat collection. I, too, have mostly modern US coins. I have a large collection of Wheat Pennies, especially the 1943 steel ones. Most are from between 1935 and 1958.

 

I used to collect ham radio gear (been a ham since 1974). But I've since sold 90%
of it off. Still sitting on THOUSANDS of high value "unobtanium" radio parts that I
sell off slowly on eBay.

At one point, I owned over 500 different transmitters and receivers from the tube
era of ham gear. But as many who've collected know, at some point the collection
starts to own YOU.

In the past I also collected cameras, slide rules, and a few other things.

Now I collect NOTHING. I just wish all this stuff was GONE!! Working on it, but it
takes a lot of time and effort.

Wow! Talk about time warp! I just sold an old Sony Reel to Reel.

I just started buying modern silver dollars as an investment. Canadian Maples .9999 pure and I have an American Liberty silver. Silver is on the rise!

 

Ok, I put some of them up in the section.

 

I used to shoot a lot of trap competition. Was AA-27-A when I was into it but that was 20 years ago. If you are going to hang around Italian cars though, you need to get a Perazzi!

I did not intend to but I ended up collecting golf clubs. Not hickory shafted antiques mind you but just clubs. When I first started playing golf back in the late 60's I was a college student and could not afford much. I paid $25 at a pawn shop for a set of Sam Snead Blue Ridge woods, a mis-matched set of irons and a worn out bag. I played with this set for about two years before upgrading to something better. Funny, I improved quite a lot and was shooting consistently in the upper 80's with this old set of has beens. When I finally did upgrade I got to a handicap of 7 with a best ever of an even 70-once....Now I would be surprised if I could shoot under 100 as I get to play about once a year whether I need to or not....

Whenever my friends would get a brand new set of clubs I would be envious and say to myself that someday I would have a set of clubs like them. But I still had to buy used. My first set of new woods was a set of PGA clubs that I paid I think $115 for the 1,3 and 5. And then I made the mistake of buying a set of Shakespeare irons with fiberglass shafts. Kept them for less than a year.....

Well, years later I started seeing sets of clubs at garage and estate sales I had wanted earlier. But, now I could afford them. I mean I have matching sets of Hogans, Hagens, Palmers, First Flights, Titleists, DX Tourneys, Tony Pena's, Pings, Taylor Made, Callaway, King Cobra and the like. I usually have matching woods and complete sets of irons. I also have about 100 putters in a barrel in the garage. Acushnet Bulls-eyes, Pings, Ray Cook, Otey Chrismon and many others. I think I counted 19 complete sets of clubs in the garage now with bags, woods, irons and putters. And a barrel of putters and various woods, irons and utility clubs...........And they are taking up a lot of space.......

I had a garage sale about six months ago and sold three sets for about $100 each, which is a pretty cheap way to start playing with a pretty decent set. Now it is time to get serious about getting rid of them. I will keep my current set and my wife and sons sets. Other than that, everything is going to be offered. I play a Great Big Bertha driver, Adams 3 and Ping 5. A set of Tommy Armour Silver Scot 956 irons and a few utility clubs and putters I switch out.]

But I need to get the garage cleaned out so wish me luck. And pass me a crying towel as I witness the loss I will get from the sale of most of the clubs........

 

If I were closer I'd come over to take a look at what you have James. I've got a few sets that I've collected over the years.

The funny thing about putters is the one I use the most is one that came with a no-name set that I bought for about $100 while I was traveling one time. And that was a COMPLETE set, irons, woods, putter and bag. I don't know what it is about that putter but I have several others including one or two that I paid more for than that whole cheap set, and I still keep coming back to this one.

Oh and don't think of it like you are losing money on the clubs. You enjoyed them and are passing them on to someone else to enjoy. That was how I started too by the way, bought a whole set from a friend of my Dad's for $75.

 

I keep an old Golfcraft beveled blade putter in my bag all the time. I use it on average speed greens. I will pull out the Bulls-Eye blade for short cut greens and the Otey Chrismon mallet for longer, slower greens. I played the Scotty Cameron several times but never developed a good feel with it and leave it at home. I recently acquired a Harvey Penick beveled blade with a balata insert and it feels pretty good. I have taken it to the putting green on several occasions and found I like it.

I was talking to a man while looking at some more used clubs a few days ago. He told me he is looking for a right hand metal 3 wood with a steel shaft. I am calling him tomorrow with my search results from my "collection". I found him four 3 woods, two 4 woods and three 5 woods. I am going to recommend he get the First Flight 3 wood with the regular shaft and new chamois grip. I would take $15 for any of them...........He said his brother wants to start playing golf and may bring him by to look at some of my sets. I have a real nice set of Hogan Edge irons, King Cobra metal woods, a couple of utility clubs and will let him choose his putter from the barrel and a Taylor Made bag. He can pick it up for under $100. It would make a very nice starter set I believe......

 

Old post WW II - Air Force, Navy, Marines, and Reserve Fighter and Attack Squadron patches. Enclosed, is the 86th Fighter Interceptor Squadron. At the time, the unit flew the F-86D. The squadron was based at Youngstown, Ohio. The patch is from 1953.

My Dad has A LOT of coins and has a coin collection dating back to the 60's. He has some really nice ones and some really rare ones. He is very proud of his collection.

 

Got these additions to my coin collection today. May not be worth much, but still pretty cool to receive in change.
