Two observations: 1. A third camp is that some owners relish the role of "curator/steward" in that they are 'keepers of the flame' preserving something special for the next owner who takes possession of the car. 2. The inflationary impact on the dollar is rarely spoken about. If one buys a Ferrari for $100K and sells it 8 years later for $110K, he has lost money in inflation-adjusted terms - he hasn't made $10K. And I agree with SrfCity that depreciation, maintenance, parts, etc. further guarantee the losing proposition that most of these cars represent from a financial perspective. However, there's no doubting that the thrill of the ownership/driving experience is unequaled among exotic cars.
