I had $33,000 taken out of a bank account that was only active for 4 days. Easy as pie to track that moron down. I got the account back up to par and all was well. I'm the kind of guy that will spend $15,000 and 4 years to get a $500 deposit back. {On a bait and switch at a car dealership} No one steals money from me and comes out ahead.
That's good that you are able to manage well, but I hope you don't put your self in any life-or-death situation which may require a credit card, but you are unable to get access to funds at that time. Maybe such a hypothetical situation could have been avoided by keeping at least 1 credit card in your pocket. Best of luck. ~shahedc .
this was a very interesting thread. i think we all learned a bit. i wonder, is this a thread that maybe should be deleted rather than kept around for posterity?
I almost lost over $800 to a looser on an internet swap board electronics deal. He had a good history of dealing with others. I called him and made the deal to send him the money. All was well. A few e-mails were exchanged as time went by and no equipment arrived. Then....nothing. No gear. No answers to my e-mail. Seven months went by as I did some internet detective work. Finally found one of his ex girlfriends who gave me a contact to his PROBATION officer. That's comforting (not). Turns out the sap had done a bit of harassment and some other shady deals. A few calls to the probabtion officer and the US POSTMASTER in his district helped get him in gear. Turns out he was hiding out by living with mommy over in the next state. But I found him and had the postmaster give him a call. "Either return my money or somebody is going to JAIL" is what the postmaster told him. I had my money within a week.
Well those situations are to be avoided for sure. But things to pop up from time to time. I don't follow you on the credit card point. In a "tight spot" what would a credit card do? Mot banks would allow a thousand or so each day.
The half life of cash even immersed in water is in the years. We pull money out of sunken ships all the time on the cost. The Lusitaina safe was filled with water for 70 years and they got cash out of it in the 1980's. (I think Geraldo did that one.) So dont worry about moisture esp if you are going to be checking it yearly or even every 5 years. Neil, I emailed you some guidance.
tight spot = stranded somewhere with no direct access to cash, and just 1 credit card in your pocket for, say, a cab fare, or an emergency purchase or something.. just hypothetical, so I wasn't thinking about any specific scenario...! ~shahedc .
Who s going to steal it? Don't worry The Canadian Government is there to protect you not just tax you
Burying paper will eventually deteriorate. You need to convert it to gold or if you have A LOT of cash, diamonds. It's amazing how much money you can carry in diamonds. Literally millions of $$$.
For those who recommended he converst the cash into Gold back in 2007 gave very wise investment advice even if they did not know it. What is the Troy Ounce trading for now? What was it back in 2007?
Can't imagmine what money would smell like after 12 months in the ground. Paper currency we had in a deposit box for 6 months smelled awful from the lack of ventilation. The tellers even complained when exchanged.
Had to be something on the cash to start with like mold. I've had cash in sdb's for over 60 years in some cases (Dad's stuff.) and it is fine.
