Serge, I didn't. I studied the idea very hard but found that the risks of ownership exceed the premise. It really is a car built for the F1 transmission and the manual is apparently more akeward to drive than the Carrera gt transmission. Serge, a dramtically different beast from the 458. You and I should meet up for a run to C&C soon!

I prefer manual transmissions also but I have heard that the car does not pair up well with the manual. It was designed for the F1 transmission and it is a beast with it! I was also told Ferrari only made about 6 cars in 2007 with manual transmissions and NONE after that
At least try the car with the F1 also before you decide. Good Luck!.

    Joe,
What year did you get and is it a HGTE car.?

I bought a late model 2008 with 2200 miles. Not HGTE but the premium on them is too high in my opinion.

Ok, let's clear some of this up.
You didn't have a flaming fire, just a lot of smoke, right?

The oil was from a breather tube that became loose which got on something hot which caused the smoke.

You admit frequenting Taco Bell and that is not the source of the oil involved here.

When your thread title uses the word "Fire" people envision huge, unstoppable flames.
It seems there were more flames from your choice of food than from the Ferrari.

    Live well, Lee

Maybe you should change the title of the thread to, " I caught my 458 smoking behind the Taco Bell today":)

I have the car back now and I must admit I am very impressed on how the Dealer and Ferrari handled the incident. I knew they would fix it because it is under warranty but I did not expect the seriousness they treaded this with. They replaced alot of stuff and the car is perfect now. Ferrari thinks there is a software issue and they did a patch mod on my car. The dealer expected a service bulletin for a software change within a few months.

They replaced the Cad converter and the mufflers plus new plugs. As I one person posted it was alot of smoke, some sparks, melted stuff and the car had to be towed back to the dealer. The car was picked up within 12 minutes of my frantic call. No car company is perfect but in my view they handled the incident perfectly!

Taco Bell was not important to the root cause :)

The dealer delivered the car to the Festival of speed at Mission Inn resort exotic car show for me so I could show the car at the show. I also had my Mosler 900 MTS at the show. Both cars had quite a crowd :)

The ferrari dealer also took my Mosler back in thier truck and they did some of the adjustments that were needed to the car to help me out. I appreciate Bruce their top mechanic for doing this favor for me. Bruce on his day off was at the show and he dug in to help me and the mosler. There were a few others from the dealership like dave and Anthony who also helped.

    Great people

    Lee,

Kudos on your class act in dealing with the tragedy with your new Ferrari! I am encouraged by the professional service from Ferrari in helping you out with your car. I know that other marques would never give that same level of white glove service. Like I doubt that Audi or Lamborghini would do the same thing but I could be wrong.

thank you for all of the kind well wishes. The car is great now.

Also I showed two of my cars at the Festival of speed. The ferrari dealer delivered my 458 to the show. While I was there my other show car the Mosler would not start. The ferrari dealer took the Mosler back in thier transport turck so it would be a shorter drive for the Mosler people to pick up the car.

Later I find out the Dealer and Bruce the Ferrari lead mechanic went through the car and fixed some grounding problems and a few other things. It turns out the car had bad fuses and was never charging. So on short trips which is what I mostly do the battery power pnly was okay.

The Mosler manufacturer wanted to pick up the car and look at it anyway. They said my car is one of only two with the high hp option. They have called me every day with an update. I am anxious to get the car back, I miss it :)

So you do not think I am a car wreck when it comes to cars, my other cars are perfect :)

Fight fire with fire, as they say.

Seriously - to bring up a problem which hasn't occurred for 3 years and which affected only a very small number of 458's is rather childish. The Aventador many issues too. It is a supercar, they all have their weaknesses. Ferrari has nothing to be ashamed of in terms of the 458. It is a fantastic achievement which moved the goal posts for the MP4-12C, and all the other supercars that came after it. It certainly threw a spanner in the Gallardo box. You need to think outside of brand names. Lambo's are great cars, so are Ferraris, so are Macs. What you buy is your preference, doesn't mean the other brand has to burnt at the stake (pun intended).
