best meal I have EVER had was in NYC on 8th avenue, nice little restaurant with exceptional food quality .... mind you, everywhere else I ate the food was terrible , too much sugar and I don't need help getting fat, but I would like another meal from THAT restaurant
I was astonished watching the US biggest loser one night. Not one of the contestants had ever eaten fish that wasn't deep fried in batter and turned their noses up at lightly grilled prime tuna.
We had several great meals in NYC but the best thing was discovering the Whole Food Market at Columbus Circle which meant we could take superb food back to our hotel. There isn't anything like it in Australia. http://www.tripadvisor.com.au/Restaurant_Review-g60763-d952670-Reviews-Whole_foods_market-New_York_City_New_York.html We went to de Niro's restaurant - very cool scene, excellent food and a fun experience. http://www.tripadvisor.com.au/Restaurant_Review-g60763-d1048640-Reviews-Locanda_Verde-New_York_City_New_York.html
I remember the portions I ate in Vegas were HUGE also! Nothing special either. I also think I saw an armed gaurd in Hollywood, but not at Macca's resturant, another one I think?? Really? Jeez!!
Just spent 6 weeks in the US and going back in two weeks time. Summary: LA - A hole, other than Trader Joes - simply the best supermarket chain in the world! San Francisco - fantastic place, very pretty, great city, great people and great food down on the Bay Vegas - Not much to say there Chicago - Fantastic city, best steak I have ever had (Chicago Chop House). Stunning art all over the city and really great people NYC - NOTE: Stay in an apartment in the Upper East. Best part of the trip. Lived like a local and did what locals do - simply amazing place (walked from 83rd St to 1 St) - Just awesome. Washington - Great museums and very easy to get around. Best Burger in the US - Rays Hell Burgers - where Obama and Medvidev had lunch Denver - Ski'd Snowmass / Aspen - skiing out of this world In summary the US is huge with many different people and places. One needs to experience it before generalizing about the people and the place.
Good ****, sounds like a holiday you will never forget. I visited LA, Vegas, SF and SD. Had a great time in each place. I was driven around, showed all the cool **** and we did A LOT of car stuff! That made the trip a lot more memorable. Thanks for sharing your trip, did you drive across the USA?? Or flew across, spending 5-7 days in each city?
Go to New Orleans..... so far, the best food I've had in the USA. Try Jacque Imo's, Moms Deli, Soul Food Deli.... Great food, huge portions, great service.
Flew, drove and went by train. It was an awesome trip. Most memorable was: New Years Eve in Times Square Lake Forrest Ferrari in Chicago - Makes ZAG look small!! Jogging around Central Park in the snow Burger in Washington Guggenheim in NYC - Art was unbelievable Its the small things you do with family and friends that make a trip special. Landing in LA would put anyone off the US. You have to get outa that place FAST!!
Lol, excellent! I will go back again with Nicole one day soon, show her the same **** I did over a few weeks. Then...............fly everywhere else and enjoy the rest of the world. Then we will come back and spend NYE in NY for 2 weeks or so. Looking forward to that actually. LA was actually pretty good. I saw a lot of cool stuff there and went driving on some amazing roads. If you dont have the "local tour guides" driving you around and showing you around, I can understand why you and most others I have talked to say the same things about LA.
Agree as did not have local "guide" in LA but did so in all other cities. Roads around SF up to Carmel and Pebble Beach are excellent. Beautiful forests and nice and windy. Coppers there are also not fascists like here in VIC so was a pleasure.
did nothing for me but then I'm a neanderthal ...... I remeber visiting the national art gallery in ACT and seeing a piece of red carpet going from the ceiling to the floor and tehy were calling that contemporary arts worth heaps I'll get drunk and throw up all over the floor for them and charge them $500k, same effort
I don't think that highly of our cops, calling them fascists would be polite and make you look like a suck up in my 'burb All the time in the world for the poor buggers that have to do domestics and inform relatives of loved ones deaths but the HWP are &^*@$%^!7864&*^@%&1$~&*$^&*%^~y4&*~6&*^&*`6347863478~6`86346&*~!~8`147
and call it..."Modern man - a reflection in socio attitudinal behavior"....or some such crap? - They had a series on European art from the 20's to he late 30". Was very interesting given the times in Europe then.
to me, abstract art is a con, BS done by some escoteric, intellectual who can't paint Picasso, Pollock, etc .... rubbish then you've got drug addicts like Salvador Dali painting this sort of rubbish Image Unavailable, Please Login
It's weird about LA but my teenage girls who have been to USA, UK, France, Italy etc regard LA as their favourite place - too much Foxtel perhaps. I liked it too. You need a car there though, and be willing to explore.
Quite like Dali but anyway. Assume you don't appreciate Cow Art then? Image Unavailable, Please Login
There ya go, explains it all. Absolutely. A car is a must! Only one other friend that I know went there with his Wife last year and drove around LA/SF and he LOVED it too. The other 10 or so who didnt drive around LA said it was a **** hole etc..etc. Interesting stuff.
LOL. The US trying to get the reborn Jesus to migrate there. US pres "Come to America where our bees produce honey" Jesus "Ye and ya flys each ****"
In Florida right now, going to LA tomorrow.. The food is woeful and every Menu contains a legal warning though I have come to like sine "sliders". Far more worrying than the food however is the Little River Band who seem to be playing everywhere that easy listening music is required.
I've been visiting the States for three decades. As a student and budget traveller the food was cheap and hi-carb and if you are travelling on foot that's what you need. I worked there later and travelled a good deal - some of my fondest memories are from meals in small family diners out west where you get taken in as a temporary family member.....they are some of the most hospitable people you will ever meet. And the old saw is true too.....the less they have the more they share. And later, when I could afford it, we had some fabulous meals in NYC, Washington, New Orleans, Savannah, and Boston. But if I had to choose, it would be the family diners out west.
I just got back from visiting my brother in law in Sydney who has just returned from living in Boston for 5 years. He's often spoken of the good food there and in particular lobster. Apparently there's a few good spots around. He used to live in Melbourne so had a good idea on what good food tastes like. Interesting was his comment regarding how everyone here is so anal on sticking to the speed limit and driving so slow as in within a few kph, 53kph in a 50kph zone. He said it was quite common to drive to work at 80MPH in a 55MPH zone in the state'. Providing you weren't being stupid and the bunch were all travelling at the same speed the coppers never pulled you over and times he was overtaken by them.
Well, we all remember when it was like that here too. That was before state governments turned it into a revenue stream.
