'98 355 F1 Spider. New axle boot, new motor mounts, front bumper repaired/painted and skid plates added, new gearbox gaskets, new throwout bearing, new clutch, reconditioned flywheel, oil change, F1 fluid flushed and changed. Car is finally leak free. Ready to take delivery. All that was needed to do was do the re-learn procedure with the SD1 -no luck, SD2 - no luck, SD3 - no luck. Can't communicate with the gearbox ECU...WTF??? Why am I being punished like this??? All I want to do is drive my car and enjoy it. Very fed up. Now I know why people recommend standard shift over F1. Any ideas out there??? Has this happened to anyone else? I don't want to hear that my ECU is bad. Car is still at the shop as they are trying to diagnose the communication problem. Possibly a bad wire now. IDK. Pissed.

I'm going to be hated for saying this but it's almost scary how much trouble a '98 model is giving you. I know it's 13 years old, but I figured most quirks would have been taken care off by the later models.

I jumped the gun! The problem was a bad power wire to the ECU. There was a staple through it that was shorting it out. All ok. Guys were working on it on a Sunday! Good thing for schematic diagrams. Hats off to the guys at Bradan!

    No kidding. Good Question.

We used to intentionally sabotage electronic wiring/landline communications wire that way.

This one is hard to believe ...... Not the staple but WHY it was there. Oh .... heck YES, the staple too.

Seems like at one point someone tried to secure the cable going to the ECU with a staple or screw. Stupid idea and look what happened. They had to check pin by pin (I think there were 40 of them) to find out which wire did not have power. If I would have brought the car to Ferrari they would have thrown parts at it and the first I'm sure would have been the gearbox ECU...$3300. "Whew" is an understatement!

This repair was not fun haha. The car worked fine but when it came time to program after installing a new clutch the ECU would not let us gain access. We tried multiple SD testers hoping it was just our old SD1 at fault.

A continuity test was preformed pin by pin until a dead power source wire was found. At some point a sheetrock screw was used to secure the ECU covers behind the driver seat. The screw went into the wiring harness. Once removed the wire went dead leaving us stranded.

Thank you to rifledriver and Dave helms for bouncing back a few suggestions.

Photos of the installation can be found at the following link.

The answer is: they only come in bags of one hundred; however, they are sold as "each" from a pricing standpoint; and please, if you have to ask the price you should not be driving the car!! Just pass your credit card over the counter and TRUST US!!

Hats off to the guys at Bradan. A sheetrock screw. Of all f-----g things! Took her home today and she shifts better than ever! I take back what I said about the F1. All the enjoyment came back to me as I was shifting thru the gears while cruising down the Long Island Expressway. Also helps that I didn't have to spring for a $3300 gearbox ECU!!! Forza Ferrari!
